Özet
İİ ÖZET Onsekizinci yüzyıl sonunda Avrupada sosyal ve politik kriz süresince ortaya yeni bir edebiyat türü çıkmıştır. Külhanbeylerine ait olan roman türünün kadınlara yönelik varyasyonu olan bu tür daha sonra Gotik Romans olarak adlandırılmıştır. Gotik Romans terör ve korku duygularını uyandırmayı başarır. Mekan ortaçağdır ve bu roman türü tarihi şatolar, kapak görevi yapan kapılar, mahzenler, gizli geçitler, kasvetli koridorlar ve kuleler gibi bazı kalıplaşmış parçalarla tanımlanmıştır. Kadın kahraman, onu hayal dünyasındaki maceralara taşıyan gizemli bir yolculuğa neredeyse hep aynı biçimde gönderilmiştir. En ünlü Gotik Roman yazarlarından biri de Ann Radcliffe'dir. Onun en bilinen romanı ise The Mysteries of Udolpho'dur. The Mysteries of Udolpho tipik bir onsekizinci yüzyıl Gotik Romansı olup, sahip olması beklenen tüm özellikleri kapsar. Ayrıca, kadın kahraman Emily St. Aubert de geleneksel bir Gotik kahramanıdır. Bu roman türü, son derece popüler olsa da, çoğu kez hicvedilmiş t ir. Jane Austen' m Northanger Abbey adlı romanı bu tür hicivlere bir örnek olsa da türü sadece komik bir şekilde taklit etmeyip, hayal ve gerçeği birbirinden ayıramayan hassas okurlara bu tür romanların etkisinin ne kadar tehlikeli olduğunu gösterdiğinden daha özelliklidir.

III ABSTRACT During the social and political crisis in Europe in the late eighteenth century, a new form of literature came into being; a female variation of the picaresque novel that was later called the Gothic Romance. Gothic Romance contrives to excite the emotions of terror and fear; the setting is medieval and the genre ischarecterized by- certain set features such as ancient castles, trapdoors, vaults, secret passages, gloomy corridors and turrets. The heroine is almost invariably sent on a mysterious journey which opens the way to adventures in a world of fantasy. One of the most famous of the Gothic novel writers is Ann Radcliffe and her best known novel is The Mysteries Of Udolpho. The Mysteries of Udolpho is a typical eighteenth century Gothic Romance and emdobies all the expected features. Further, the heroine, Emily St. Aubert is a conventional Gothic heroine. This type of novel, though extremely popular, was often satirized. Jane Austen' s Northanger Abbey is an example of such satires, but is rather special as it does not merely parody the genre but shows how dangerous the effect of such novels can be on suspectible readers who cannot always distinguish between fact and fiction.
