Demand for energy is increasing with the increase in the world population. However, oil-derived resources are limited and increasingly running out of. For this reason it has to head towards to new energy sources. Bioethanol is a type of a fuel source that will replace with gasoline and generally is produced from the resources containing sucrose, starch and cellulose.Containing sucrose and starch sources are also used in the food industry, the usage of these sources in bioethanol production leads to some drawbacks. Therefore, the biomass containing cellulosic structures, but not used in a food industry, has been investigated. Along with the high cellulose content of switchgrass is selected by United States as a source of energy crops. In this study, lignocellulosic structures of various switchgrass species were analysed and it was found that type 7 has the lowest lignin content, 17.7%, and type 8 has the highest cellulose content, 38.18%. Switchgrass type 7 was processed by biological pretreatment with Pycnoporous cinnabarinus, Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus dryinus and the best results were found with the pretreatment process by P. cinnabarinus. SEM analysis of the biomass biologically pretreated by fungi showed that the switchgrass biomass was partially degraded. Chemical pretreatment with Ca(OH)2 was also performed on the four different types of switchgrass and after the processing it was observed that the lignocellulosic structures of swicthgrass type 3, 4 and 7 species were destroyed. 52% of the biomass was degraded with the enzymatic hydrolysis of type 7. Furthermore, it was found that the 77,75% of the cellulose in the structure was broken to glucose. Between different nine switchgrass species, the type 7 was found as a most appropriate candidate for bioethanol production.
