Özet

ÖZET Katherine Mansfield 1888 yılında Yeni Zelanda'da doğmuştur. 1911 yılında In a German Pension (Bir Alman Pansiyonunda) adlı kısa öykü kitabının basımıyla üne kavuşmuştur. Katherine Mansfield yaşadığı dönemden daima ileride olmuştur. Avrupa'nın erkeksi bakış acısına meydan okumuş ve kadınların haksız muamele görmelerinden doğan öfkeyi ve bu duruma karşı gösterdiği tepkileri eserlerinde dile getiren yirminci yüzyılın ilk kadın yazarlarından biri olmuştur. Bu tezde, Katherine Mansfield' in kadının güç durumu ve bu duruma verdiği tepkileri etkileyici bir şekilde ele aldığı yedi önemli öyküsü üç grup dahilinde incelenmiştir: yazarlığının erken döneminde kaleme aldığı“The Tiredness of Rosabel”(1908, Rosabel' in Yorgunluğu),“New Dresses”(1911, Yeni Elbiseler) ve“Frau Brechenmacher Attends a Wedding”(1911, Bayan Brenchenmacher Bir Düğüne Katılıyor); Mansfield' in en uzun eseri ve İngiliz öykü türünde bir dönüm noktası olduğu için ayrı olarak incelenen“Prelude”(1918, Başlangıç); ve hayatının son yıllarında yazdığı“Bliss”(1918, Sevinç),“The Garden Party”(1921, Garden Parti) ve“Life of Ma Parker”(1921, Parker Ananın Hayatı). Hayatının son yıllarında Mansfield toplumsal bozukluğu yermeye devam eder. Yazar“Bliss”de genç bir annenin yüzeysel ve iki yüzlü bir toplumda tatmin edici bir kimlik bulma çabalarını ortaya koyar.“The Garden Party”de ise genç bir kız olan Laura' nın faniliği idrak edişi ve bu yüzden de çevresinden kopuşunu anlatır.“Life of Ma Parker”ise orta yaslı fakir bir kadının ümitsiz durumuna ve başkalarının acılarına kayıtsız kalan insanlara değinir. Teknik açıdan da bu kısa öyküler Mansfield' in bu türün başta gelen yenilikçi yazarlarından biri olduğunu göstermektedir. öykülerinde kurgu unsurunun önemini azaltmıştır. Şiirsel anlatımı, ince ayrıntıları yansıtma yeteneği, nesne ve olayları simgesel olarak ele alışı, geriye dönüş, benzerlik ve tezat gibi edebi sanatlar kullanışı ve kısa öykü türüne getirmiş olduğu bilinç akımı tekniği Mansfield' m başta gelen önemli özelliklerindendir.

ABSTRACT Katherine Mansfield was born in New Zealand in 1888. In 1911, she established her reputation as an important writer with her first collection of short stories, I_n a German Pension. Katherine Mansfield was always ahead of her time. She challanged Europe's masculine viewpoint and became one of the first twentieth-century writers to voice the anger of women at the injustice of their treatment and express it in prose with a variety of women's response to their state. In this thesis, seven of Katherine Mansfield's outstanding short stories, which effectively touch upon the sad and painful condition of women and their response to this, are dealt with within three groups: the early period, containing“The Tiredness of Rosabel”(1908),“New Dresses”(1911), and“Frau Brechenmacher Attends a Wedding”(1911);“Prelude”(1918), which is displayed separately as it is the longest of her works and is a milestone in the history of the British short story; and the late period which includes“Bliss”(1918),“The Garden Party”(1921) and“Life of Ma Parker”(1921). In her early writing, Katherine Mansfield presents women who are selfless and who are victimized by strict social definitions. In“The Tiredness of Rosabel”Mansfield depicts a vulnerable girl who is entrapped by hercrushing economic condition. In“New Dresses”she portrays a rebellious girl, Helen, who is unjustly punished as she goes against the authority of her parents.“Frau Brechenmacher Attends a Wedding”satirizes the grossness of men, and the degrading and victimizing nature of marriage. Moreover, in“Prelude”we are introduced to a group of women of all ages, who are tense and frustrated in many ways because of their entrapment. During the final stage of her life Katherine Mansfield goes on protesting against social corruption. In“Bliss,”we see a young English wife and mother, who tries to establish a satisfactory identity in a superficial and hypocritical society. In“The Garden Party”she deals with the isolation of another daughter, Laura due to her awakened consciousness of mortality and victimization of women. In“Life of Ma Parker”Mansfield presents the hopelessness of a poor middle-aged woman and criticizes the people who are indifferent to the misery of others. Technically, these short stories show Mansfield's significance as one of the chief modernist writers. In these stories, Mansfield emphasizes mood rather than plot. The notable characteristics of her works are accumulation of small details, the symbolic use of objects and incidents, literary devices such as flashbacks, parallels, contrasts and daydreams, and the stream-of-consciousness technique which Mansfield brought to the short story.
