Özet
II. Mahmud dönemi İstanbul'unu konu edinen bu çalışma, temel olarak bir kentsel tarih araştırmasıdır. 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısında bir Osmanlı kentinin, değiştirilme ve dönüştürülme sürecini ve biçimlerini ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir. Aynı zamanda, bu dönüşüm sürecinde rol oynayan aktörlerin bunu hangi biçimlerde gerçekleştirdiklerine ve bu süreçte kendilerinin de hangi biçimde değiştiğine açıklık getirmeye çalışmaktadır.II. Mahmud dönemi, gerçekte geleneksel Osmanlı bilgi, kavrama, algılama ve üretme biçimlerinin başka bir biçime evrilme sürecidir. Bu doğrultuda, II. Mahmud dönemi, kent biçimlenişinin ve kent kurgusunun kendi rutin iç dinamiklerinin farklılaştığı ve kendine yeni dinamikler meydana getirdiği bir değişim süreci olarak ele alınmıştır.Çalışmanın ana teması, Osmanlı'nın başkenti üzerinden bir kent okuması yaparak, bu değişim ve dönüşümlerin kentsel mekana hangi biçimlerde yansıdığını ortaya koymaktır. Buradaki asıl amaç, erken 19. yüzyıl İstanbul'u üzerinden, Osmanlı dünyasının kentsel ve fiziksel kavrayış biçimlerinde meydana gelen dönüşümlerin okumasıdır.II. Mahmud döneminde, Osmanlı yönetici sınıflarının kentleri kavrayış biçimlerinde meydana gelen değişimlerle bağlantılı olarak, üretilen kentsel mekan da artık başka bir biçime evrilir. Bu doğrultuda, kent ve kentsel mekan, bütünüyle iktidarın meşruiyetinin temsiliyet nesnesi olarak kullanılır. Kent, yeni bir anlam üzerinden kavramsallaştırılır. Böylece, bir nesne olarak ele alınan kent ve kentsel mekan, iktidarın erk ideolojileri etrafında biçimlendirilir. Bu doğrultuda, kentsel düzenlemeler, iktidarın temsiliyeti problemine işaret edecek imge ve semboller olarak ele alınır.

This study that deals with Istanbul in the period of Sultan Mahmud 2nd, basically is a research of urban history. And it aims to state the process and ways of changes, transformations of an Ottoman city in the early 19th century. Also it displays the transformation of the actors who have played big roles in this process themselves.In fact, the period of Sultan Mahmud 2nd has been the process of evolution of traditional Ottoman information, conception, perception and producing techniques to another form. In this way, the period of Sultan Mahmud 2nd has been considered as a process of creation of a new system which the routine dynamics of Ottoman world has been undergone a change and also instituted its own new dynamics.The main theme of the study is to display the transformation of the urban space, by an urban reading of Ottoman capital, Istanbul. The main aim is to bring to light the transformation of physical and urban conception ways of Ottoman world in the early 19th century. And also the diversification of presentation ways, forms and objects of the urban.According to the changes of Ottoman?s urban conception ways, the creation of the urban space has been evoluted to another form. Whole urban and urban space has been produced as the presentation object of the power?s legitimation. And, the urban has gained a new meaning by its new conception. Thus, by the transfomation of urban to an object, urban space has reshaped by the new power ideologies. And in the power presentation context, the urban arrangements have been undertaken as the symbols and images of the authority.
