SUMMARY The thesis that is named“Journalism as a Profession in Turkey and The Identity of Turkish Journalist”is a descriptive study. As a profession or an occupation Journalism is explained from the historical point of view and the working conditions of journalists are studied in this thesis. Besides the above, professional organizations of Turkish Press, Journalism education in Turkey and ethic codes of Turkish Journalists are fully examined. In the second part of this study, primarily, common characteristics of Turkish Journalists are clarified. Next a questionnaire is applied to 85 Journalists in Ankara. As a result, it can be said that Journalism in Turkey is gradually identified and is gained more importance as a profession and as a working field, it holds a considerable amount of special characteristics. It has been pointed out that there has been a great improvement in the quality and quantity of the journalists. Especially the increases in the number of the well-educated journalists and women Journalists are pleasing in the last decades of the 20th Century in Turkey. 235
