SUMMARY The May 27, 1960 revolution and the constitution established after it mark the beginning of a new decade in the Turkish political, economic and social life. The sprit the revolution introduced may be summarized in the words,“freedom”and“dynamism”. Art in general, and theatre in particular doubtlessly represent the vitality, the novelty and the progressiveness in the social life. Theatre mirrored the new outlook. New styles were experienced, new proposals were made, new playwrights wrote new plays. New theatre groups staged them with a new breath. A totally new step was made to establish the Modern Turkish National Theatre. It was aimed at mingling the traditional Turkish Theatre with the Modern World Theatre. Toward the end of the I960' s there becomes a decline in the acceleration of the period. The liveliness gradually leaves its place to depression, economic and political. Inflation, ideological combats, political tension prepare the grounds for the March 12, 1970 military coup. Theatre experiences the same depression. Experimental ism fades away. Only box office plays can stand againts economic crisis. Theatre groups are scattered. Actors »re attacked. This dissertation titled The 1960-1970 Period in the Turkish, Thttttrt {Thwftrw firqMP* m# Thwir ftcitftyiUffi?, «*"»» at 580analysing the period economical ly, politically and socially at first and to display which factor» determine the life of the theatre of that period. Then, theatre grop» of the decade are taken into consideration exhaustively and in detail. Their casts, plays, theatre policies and critics they received are displayed.
