oil -water layer thickness, slug size and well configuration in production port. A light crude oil with a viscosity of 14.5 mPa.s was used in sixteen displacement tests. A quantitative comparison was made to show the difference between waterf looding and polymer augmented waterf looding runs. The results of the displacement tests showed that as the thickness of bottom water zone increases, the ultimate oil recovery decreases. Polymer solution had a favorable impact on the waterf lood performance. However, the worse the conventional waterf lood performance was, the more effective the polymer as mobility control agent. For instance, when bottom water zone was approximately as thick as the oil zone, only about 25% of original oil in place (OOIP) was recovered, whereas with polymer as a mobility control agent, more than 55% of OOIP was recovered! For polymer injection, the effect of slug size was discussed with the aid of concentration curves and retention rate values, and a slug of 0.6 PV was obtained as optimal. Using horizontal production well showed slightly better oil recovery than vertical production well in conventional waterf lood of the reservoir model with a thin bottom water zone. However, in polymer augmented waterf looding, oil recovery was less than that in vertical production well case. This was due to the IVABSTRACT POLYMER AUGMENTED WATERFLOODING IN A RESERVOIR WITH A BOTTOM WATER ZONE HODAIE, Homayoun M.S. in Petroleum Engineering Supervisor: Assoc.
