Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı İngilizce öğretiminde kullanılan bir ders kitabi olan Let's Speak English 7 kitabının, kitabı kullanan öğretmenler ve öğrenciler tarafından değerlendirilmesini sağlayacak bir araştırma yürütmektir. Bu araştırmada öğretmen ve öğrencilerin Let's Speak English 7 ders kitabı hakkındaki görüşlerini almak için, öğretmen ve öğrencilere iki farklı anket uygulanmıştır. Anketlerde, tutum ve düşünce ölçümünde etkili olduğu bilinen Likert ve açık uçlu soru tipleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya, Ankara ilinin farklı ilçelerindeki ilköğretim okullarında yedinci sınıf İngilizce derslerini veren 50 İngilizce öğretmeniyle, Vildan Nurettin Demirer İlköğretim Okulu'nda öğrenim gören 80 yedinci sınıf öğrencisi katılmıştır. Anketlerdeki Likert tipi soruların yüzdelik ve frekans hesaplamaları SPSS programının 13.0 versiyonunda yapılmıştır. Öğretmen ve öğrencilerin Let's Speak English 7 ders kitabını değerlendirmeleri arasında anlamlı bir fark olup olmadığı ise genel tutum ortalamalarının karşılaştırılmasıyla yapılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin ve öğrencilerin tutum sonuçlarında sınıf, cinsiyet, yaş, tecrübe ve eğitim açısından anlamlı farklar olup olmadığını araştırmak için T-testi ve Tek Faktörlü Varyans Analizi (ANOVA) yapılmıştır. Elde edilen verilere göre hem öğretmenlerin hem de öğrencilerin Let's Speak English 7 kitabı hakkında genelde olumsuz görüşlere sahip olduğu ve öğretmenlerin kitap hakkındaki görüşlerinin öğrencilerin görüşlerine nazaran daha olumsuz olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu çalışma sonucunda kitapla ilgili çeşitli problemler belirlenmiştir, ve araştırma sonuçları bu kitabın sitemli ve derinlemesine yapılan bir araştırma karşısında iii ayakta duramadığını ve olumsuz yönlerinin olumlu özelliklerinden açık bir şekilde fazla olduğunu göstermiştir. Araştırma sonuçları söz konusu kitabın yedinci sınıf İngilizce dersi için gönül rahatlığıyla tavsiye edilemeyeceğini önermektedir. Tüm bu eksikliklere, ve öğretmenleri kitabın dersin amacına hizmet etmediği yönündeki düşüncelerine rağmen endişelerin, kitabın sorunlu bölümlerini değiştirerek, çıkartarak veya ek materyallerle destekleyerek giderilebileceği düşünülmektedir. Bu amaçla, araştırmanın sonunda Let's Speak English 7 kitabında tespit edilen sorunları telafi edebilecek etkinlikler önerilmiştir.

The purpose of this study was to carry out a research to evaluate an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) coursebook, Let's Speak English 7, considering teachers' and students' perceptions about the coursebook. In order to gather data on the perceptions of students and teachers about Let's Speak English 7 two instruments were employed in this study: A teacher and a student questionnaires. The questionnaires were composed of Likert-scale items, and an openended item since these types of items are useful and effective means of gathering data about people's attitudes and opinions. A total of 130 participants, 50 English teachers who were teaching seventh grade students at state schools in different counties in Ankara and 80 seventh grade students studying at Vildan Nurettin Demirer Primary School took part in the study. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 13.0 was used to compute frequencies and percentages for each Likert-scale questions. An overall mean score was used to investigate whether there was any significant difference between the students' and teachers' evaluation of Let's Speak English 7. In addition, for the data collected from students' and teachers' questionnaires, T-tests and One-way ANOVAs were calculated in order to investigate whether there were any differences in attitudes between different groups, including class, sex, age, experience, and education. The data analysis indicated that both teachers and the students were generally negative about Let's Speak English 7, and it was found that the teachers were more negative about the coursebook than the students. This study did identify disconcerting problems v with Let's Speak English 7, and the results of the survey seemed to demonstrate that this particular coursebook actually could not stand up well to a systematic in-depth analysis and that the negative attributes far out-weighed the positive characteristics. The results of the study imply that Let's Speak English 7 cannot be whole-heartedly recommended in this particular teaching and learning situation. Despite the reservations and shortcomings, and the teachers' feeling that Let's Speak English 7 was not compatible with the the language-learning aims of the course, it was also felt that any superfluous concerns might be alleviated or eradicated through supplementing, modifying, and adapting problematic aspects of the book. In this respect, in the light of the study findings, different activities are suggested to compansate the shortcomings of the coursebook.
