SUMMARY The present study was carried out in the province capital of Sinop as well as in its districts and villages and was concerned with a number of married woman in the fertile age grup of 15-49 years appreciating the services of the regional“Program of the Welfare for Mother and Child and Family Planning”. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of social and cultural factors which influence theclaim of these services. The respective factors were established to be the following ones: education, family and matrimonial structure, profession with regard to distribution and nature of the employment, economic state, still persisting fellings of shame and mystification of birth, the wish to have a great number of children, wide-spread use of traditional methods of family planning and midwifery, the existence of some superstition with regard to birth, specially in rural areas behaviourial patterns of religious and mystical origin. In order to reduce the influence of these social and cultural factors on the efficacy of the regional attemps for Mother-Child-Welfare and Family Planning, and to offer these services in a more widened framework, it is recommended to instruct to staff performing these services on the field of social anthropology, to provide them with pratical abilities, to co-educate both partners of the matrimony in family planning, to employ midwives in the villages after having achieved the necessary skill and to support the educational activities on the subject of the Mother and Child Welfare and Family Planning by means of radio and television. 55
