Özet
11 ÖZET Saul Bellow cagdas roman yazarlari içersinde oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir. 1976 Nobel ödülude.' İt ıı dahil olmak üzere bir cok odul almistir. Bir cok üniversitede calismis olmasi ve özellikle Britanica * ft Ansiklopedisinin hazirlanmasinda önemli payi bulunmasi ona diğer yazarlardan ustun bir edebi kariyer sağlamistir. Bir yazar olarak Bellow'u herhangi bir sinifa sokmak çok zordur. Çunku o sadece modern edebiyat yorumcusu değil, ayni zamanda psikolojik içerikli romanlarda yazmaktadir. Bunlarin yani sira Bellow 'picaresque' bir yazar olarak da nitelendirilmektedir. Bel low' un Rus edebiyatcisi Dostoevsky etkisi altinda olduğu gözlenmektedir. Hemen hemen turn romanlarında Bellow trajik karakterler kul lanmistir. Bas roldeki karakterler toplumda bir yer edinemedikleri için toplum disina itilmişlerdir. Bellow'un bu trajik bakis acisi en acik bir biçimde Dangling Man. The Victim. Seize The Day adli romanlarinda gözlenmektedir. Dangling Man adli kitabinda baş rol karakteri Joseph hayatini ideal kavramlar üzerine kurmuştur. Toplumun yozlasmis olmasina karsi once savasmis ancakIll basarili olamadigi için kendini toplum dişi bulmuştur. The Victim adli romaninda Asa Leventhal kişileri baski altinda tutan toplumun kurbanidir. Seize The Dav adli romaninda ise bas karakter Tommy Wilhelm maddiyata ve basariya önem veren toplumun baskisi altinda esilir. Bellow uc romaninda da trajik bakis acisiyla incelediği karakterlerinin yozlasmis bir toplum içinde nasil kaybolduklarini anlatir.

IV ABSTRACT Saul Bellow is honored with many awards including the Nobel Prise he received in 1976. He is one of the most influential writers of his time with a distinguished literary career. He has worked in many universities and schools and for some time was in the editorial staff of the Encyclopeadia Britannica. As a writer it is difficult to label Bellow, because he is not only an interpreter of modern experience and a novelist of manners, but also a psychological novelist. In addition, he is accepted as a writer of the picaresque novel. In his novels the effects of Russian literature is observed. Some critics like Daniel Fuchs even think that he wrote his novels under the effect of Dostoevsky. In all of his novels Bellow deals with characters whose existence is tragic. That is to say, his characters are mostly alienated individuals, isolated from the society, struggling to be free and to be themselves. This tragic vision of Bellow is exposed in his novels, Dangling Man. The Victim, Seize The Day. In Dangling Man Joseph tries to live in a society where there are ideal values. However when herealizes the corruption in society, first he struggles to free himself, then he gives up and becomes an alienated individual. In The Victim., Asa Leventhal is victimised by an enslaving society» In Seize The Day, the main character Tommy Wilhelm is crushed under the pressure of a society which claims materialistic wealth and success. In this thesis the protagonists of the three novels, Dangling Man. The Victim. Seize the Day. by Bellow are analized as the tragic characters with their tragic flaws. It is also a part of this thesis to study Saul Bellow's tragic vision as an outlook on the modern world as a precursory criticism of the novels to fol low.
