ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation attempts to study the economic and antropogeographical situation of the Kilis and its environs. The area understudy situated between the Mediterranean South-Eastem geographical regions, extended along the Turkish-Syrian border and occupies the south-western section of Gaziantep plato lying the between Hatay-Maraş groben and the Euphrates. This study covers an area of 1243 sq kms., lying within the administrative borders of Kilis county, attached to Gaziantep province. It has an average altitude of 680 meters and is formed by plateaus and flatlands. A less milder Mediterranean climate is prevalent in the area where the average annual precipitation is around 516 mm, and average temperature is 16.8°C degrees. The number of the inhabitants in the area is over 120.000 according to 1990 census. About two- third of this population is settled in Kilis town. There is an intensified movement of migration from the rural areas to the urban centers. The population was increased only by 9.9 % during the 45 years between 1945-1990 because of this movement The rural settlement of different sizes around the town of Kilis ranges from quarters of districts to villages, amounting to 165. This display a structure of multiple but small units of settlements. The town of Kilis, which used to be a large village or even a small town during the Ottoman rule, developed into a large town in the course of time, characterized by being a center of retail trade serving only to the local people. Then it became one of the most important cities during the early years of Republican period. In recent years the town and its environs seem to make a relatively slow progress, in other words, it has not been able to keep pace with the development of country. The only and most important economic activity in the area appears to be agriculture which still has an extensive character. In the area where a semi-arid climate is prevalent, cereal and leguminous plants, fruit and vegetables and olive growing seem to be the main preoccupation of the local people. Animal husbandry, which follows agriculture, chiefly consists of raising sheep and goats. The next notable field of business and occupation of the people appear to be industrial managements, most of which are small workshops or plants processing agricultural produces, and small shops where old handcrafts have been able to survive. The conclude, we may say that Kilis and its environs, once a well-known town of historical importance, is now an under-developed frontier region as compared to more developed regions of the country. Despite its potentiality, it has several problems to be solved in order to transform this potentiality into more productive activities.
