SUMMARY In the present thesis, entitled“ Literary Circle in the Firs Century of Abbasid Period ”, we attempted to stady the literary activities in Baghdad, the capital of Abbasid Empire which was established after the fall of Omayyad, in a period of about a century between h.l32-232/m. 750-847. In the“ Introduction ”part of the stady, the political, social and cultural state of the mentioned period was searched. The main body of the thesis is dirived into three parts. The firs part consist of the developments in Arabic poetry up the that period: the collection and writing the narratives of Arabic poetry; literary criticism; encovragement of statesmen to the poets; the factors affecting the improvement of poetry such as making the poetry a means of earning a living; the subjects of poetry like evlagy, satire, elegy, description, lave poems, didactic poems and the changes and novelties ocevred in the style of the period. In the second part,“ Prose ”, firs the rise of Arabic prose and its stages until our period were investigated and then the subjects of Arabic prose were studied under four titles“ Oratory M, ”Kitabet ( official, religious and social mutval writings )“, ”Tevkfât ( terse sayings under the signutures of official letters )“ and ”Advice“. Under each title examples were given for the themes of each type. In the third part of the thesis, linguistic researches of the period and the field of these researches were studied under two main titles, ”Grammatical Studies“ and ”Dictionary Researches“. Grammatical studies contains the Arap grammarians of the period and their work, Basra and Kufa schools and finally the contrary views of these schools. In the dictionary researches section, these studies were taken under two titles, ”Dictionary Writing According to Subjects“ and ”Alphabetical Dictionary Writing". The characteristics of these two types of research, the linguists acted in this field and the contribution of these researches to Arabic Language were discussed in this section. Kurtd.il
