ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to discuss how to teach literature in EFL classes in general and how to teach a novel in particular. The first chapter of this thesis gives the background to the study as well as the aim and the scope. The second chapter reviews language competence and literary competence. The third chapter deals with style. I discuss students should know the style which is used by a writer to evaluate a work of art. The fourth chapter is about the grammar of the novel. Since the aim of this thesis is to show how to study a novel, we should learn the grammar of it before evaluating the novel. Chapter five is about how to teach a novel in practice. Then I give a conclusion which is a brief summary of the whole thesis.
