Özet
ÖZET Bu tez üniversitede okuyan Türk öğrencilere yabancıdil (ingilizce) öğretiminde karşılaşılan bazı anlam sorunlarını hipotez olarak ele almaktadır. Tez, giriş bölümünün dışında, iki ana bölümden oluşmaktadır. Bu iki ana bölüme girilmeden önce giriş bölümünde tez konusunun ve problemin öneminden söz edilmektedir. Bu bölümde ayrıca tez konusunun ve araştıramaya esas testler ve testlerin uygulandığı öğrenciler ile ilgili sınırlılıklardan söz edilmiştir. Tezin II. bölümünde tezin amacıyla ilgili literatür çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Literatür çalışmaları, sözcüklere ilişkin bilgiler (Lexical Notions) ve tümceye ilişkin bilgiler (Sentential Notions) diye iki alt bölümde yapılmıştır. Sözcüklere ilişkin bigiler başlığı eşanlamlılık (synonymy), zıtanlaml ı 1 ik (antonymy), bileşik sözcükler (compound words) ve deyimler (idioms) ile sınırlandırıl mıştır. Cümleye ilişkin bilgiler ile ilgili alt bölümde basit tümce yapısından hareketle tümcecikler in birleşmesiyle bileşik (compound) ve karmaşık (complex) tümce yapıları incelenmiştir. Karmaşık tümceler ile ilgili tümceci kler i ; ilgi tümcecikler i, belirteç tümcecikleri ve ad tümcecikleri adı altında incelenmiştir. Bu bölümde ayrıca incelenen I I İİmaddelere ilişkin anlambi 1 imsel özelliklerden de söz edilmiştir. Tezin III. bölümü yöntemler ve bulgulara ayrılmıştır. Tez konusunun işlenmesine ilişkin yöntemler verilmiştir ve burada anlambi 1 imsel yorumlara temel olan anlam türlerinden söz edilmektedir. Bulgular alt bölümünde, tesbit edilen problemlere ilişkin testlerin değer lendir i lmeler iy le veri lerin rakamsal sonuçları verilmiştir. Rakamsal değerlendir melerden sonra bazı maddelerin en sonunda rakamlar toplu olarak çizelgelere yerleştirilerek özetlenrneye çalışılmış tır. Rakamsal değerlendirmelerden sonra her maddenin sonunda anlambi 1 imsel yorumlar yer almaktadır. üniversitede okuyan Türk öğrencilere yabancıdil öğretiminde bazı anlam sorunlarıyla karşılaşıldığı sonucuna varılmış ve bu sorunların neler olduğu tezin sonuç bölümünde verilmiştir. Bu tezde ortaya çıkan sorunları çözebilmek için kuskusuz bazı önerilerde bulunmak gerekmektedir. Oysa, bu tür önerilerde bulunabilmek için yapılacak olan bir çalışma ayrı bir araştırma konusu olacağından bu tez konusu içine alınmamışsa da sonuç bölümünde bir kaç öneriye yer veri 1 mistir. İÜ

SUMMARY The subject of this thesis assumes some semantic problems in teaching English to Turkish students at the university level' as the original hypothesis, and it aims to discover the nature of those problems in a variety of tests. The thesis contains two main chapters and an introductory chapter. Before having started the two chapters, we introduced the significance of the subject of the thesis and the importance of the problem. This chapter also mentions some limitations on the subject and on the students who were examined. Chapter II is devoted to the study of a review of the literature related to the subject matter. It consists of two sub-chapters, about lexical notions and sentential notions. Lexical notions contain synonymy, antonymy, compound words, and idioms. Sentential notions contain structures as simple sentences, compound and complex sentences. Complex sentences consist of relative (adjectival), adverbial, and nominal clauses. The semantic properties of the research items are also introduced in this chapter. Chapter III is devoted to the methods and findings. The methods of the research are introduced, and the kinds of meaning based upon the semantic comments ar& also mentioned ivunder the title o-F 'methods'. The statistical values of the tests and the results o-F the data are presented under the sub-chapter called 'findings'. The semantic implications of the examples according to the statistical values and results are given at the end of each research item. Some semantic problems in teaching English to Turkish students at the university Are made clear in the concluding section. Clearly, it would be helpful to suggest some solutions to the problems that have surfaced in this dissertation. However, research which aims at providing those solutions is presumably a different field of study, some suggestions take place at the end of the part related with conclusion.
