Phonological Variation in Informal Turkish, Master's Thesis, Ankara, 2005. The aim of this study is to analyse the phonological free variations in Turkish future tense suffix in informal Turkish. The phonological characteristics of the future tense suffix are accounted for through an analysis of representative samples obtained from daily conversations. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical framework for the rules that govern the phonological variations of the future tense in standard and informal Turkish. The variations under this analysis are assumed to belong to different registers. The focus of the study, however, is purely phonological, rather than sociolinguistic. Therefore, no analysis has been attempted to determine the social contexts in which these registers are used. Rather, the forms have been analysed in order to determine their phonological features and the rules that are used in their derivations. While doing this, the principles of generative phonology as put forward by Chomsky and Halle (1968) have been followed. In data collection, the crucial term that is followed is the“introspection of the native speaker knowledge”as suggested by Chomsky (1968: 186). The results of the analysis demonstrate that the standard form of the future tense suffix and the registers under investigation, except for one, have the same underlying representation. They are all derived from the same deep structure through different combinations and different orders of application of the same set of rules. Almost all of these phonological rules were studied before and they existed in the Turkish phonological system. In other words, the variations have been derived by using natural phonological rules, not by writing extra rules that are specifically peculiar to the phonology of the future tense suffix.
