ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to design a specific English language curriculum to improve language abilities of the students of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management at Bilkent University School of English (BUSEL). In Chapter I, the general background of the study is given, the problem, aim and scope of the study is stated and method of data collection is explained. In Chapter II, a general review of the teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), a review of the models of approaches to syllabus design in ESP and some particular models of communicative syllabus design are discussed. In Chapter III, the information gathering instruments, a questionnaire and an interview are introduced and the criteria for preparation and application of the instruments are explained. Also the data obtained from the questionnaire and the interview are analyzed and the results are discussed. In Chapter IV, which is the core of the study, variables and constraints of the ESP syllabus are examined, students' needs are summarized, a model course design is suggested, the criteria for materials selection and possible course topics are furnished and a module is examplified. Finally Chapter V, sums up the study and gives implications for the existing program and offers suggestions for further study.
