ABSTRACT This thesis aims at analysing the past and the present English language teaching (ELT) programs at FLE departments of Turkish universities and suggesting a four- year curriculum in English language teacher training education. After stating the aim and scope of the thesis in the introduction, in the second chapter, background to the current situation in English language teacher training curricula is given. This chapter also includes information on the YOK program- the program prepared by the Higher Education Council for the FLE departments. Furthermore, there is also a section on theoretical and practical aspects of curriculum design. The third chapter expands on the issues discussed in the previous chapter. It includes a questionnaire, and inteviews held with teachers who are former graduates of FLE departments and with trainees on the subject of relevance in ELT education curricula. Also, other interviews are held with the administrators of language institutions on their teacher recruitment policies. The third chapter also presents a detailed analysis of the current ELT curricula of METÖ and Hacettepe University.In the fourth chapter, under the light of all the data which have been collected and analyzed, a four- year ELTT curriculum for the FLE departments of universities is proposed.
