Özet
ÖZET Yedi bölümden oluşan bu tez, Gramerciler tarafından İngilizceyi yabancı dil olarak öğrenenlerce problemli bir konu olarak kabul edilen ingilizcedeki Ortaçların (participle) söz dizimini (sentaks) inceler. Bu tezin amacına ulaşmak için Fırat Üniversitesi YÖK ÖGEDİL yaz kurslarına katılan öğrencilere bazı testler uygulanmış ve test sonuçları incelenip tartışılmıştır. Birinci Bölümde, İngilizcedeki Ortaçların (participle) dilbilgisel tanımı ve sınıflandırılması üzerinde durulmaktadır. Ayrıca İngilizce ve Türkçe'deki ilgi tümceleri (relativization) arasındaki farklara da değinilmektedir. Bölümün sonunda ise bu tezin amacı yer alır. İkinci Bölümde, İngilizce'deki Ortaçlar (participle) ve ilgi adılı (relative pronoun) türlerinden söz edilmektedir. Bunu daha sonra İngilizce'deki Ortaçların (participle) işlevleri izlemektedir. Üçüncü Bölümde, Türkçe'deki Ortaçlar ve yapıları bahsedilmektedir. Bunuda aynı şekilde Türkçe'de kullanılan ortaçların işlevleri izler. Dördüncü Bölümde, İngilizce ve Türkçe'deki Ortaçların benzerlik ve farklılık yönünden karşılaştırılmaktadır. Bunu, Türk dilbilimcileri tarafından yapılan Ortaçların cümle yapılarının kıyaslanması ile çalışmaları yer alır. Besinci Bölüm, tezin araştırma biçimi, öğrencilerin seçimi, verilerin toplanması, verilen testlerin neden seçildiğini, yöntem varsayımları ve sınırlamaları kapsayan bir bölümdür.Altına bölümde öğrencilere verilen test sonuçlarından elde edilen verilerin istatiksel hesaplanmaları yapılıp sonuçlar incelenmektedir. Yedinci Bölümde, istatiksel yorumlar tartışılmaktadır. Bu tezin sonunda bulunan önemli sonuçlar söyle sıralanabiliniz a) İngilizce'deki Ortaçların (participle) kullanımı incelenen metinlerdeki sıklık sıralanması ile bağıntılıdır. b) İngilizce"deki Ortaçların doğru olarak kullanımı her üç grupta (ileri-orta-baslangıç üstü) önemli bir farklılık göstermiştir. c) İngilizce öğrenen öğrenciler için Ortaçlar ' boşluk tamamlama testinde iki cümleyi birleştirme testine göre daha başarılı durumdadır. d) Türk öğrencilerinin İngilizce'deki Ortaçlar kullanmaları Türkçe'deki Ortaçların yapısal farklıklarından dolayı güçtür.

ABSTRACT This study, which comprises seven chapters, investigates one particular aspect of English syntax; the Relative Clause, which is generally considered by grammarians to be one of the most problematical areas for foreign language learners and this study analyses the difficulties which Turkish students encounter in learning to use Relative Clauses accurately. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, two tests were given to Turkish EFL students after a replacement test at the Summer school at Fırat University. The test results were then analysed and discussed. The First Chapter describes the definition of Relative Clauses in English and the two types of Relative clauses; defining and non-defining. The difference in Relativization in English and Turkish is emphasized. Also English Relative Clauses and Turkish Relative suffixes are discussed. Finally, the purpose of this study is explained. The Second Chapter deals with Relative Clauses and Relative Clause Types in English. This is followed by the function of relative pronouns which is introduced in Relative Clauses. The Third Chapter deals with Relative Clauses in Turkish. This is" followed again by the function of Turkish Relative Clauses. In the Fourth Chapter. The similarity and differences between Turkish and English Relative Clauses is explained and the research done by Turkish linguists on the comparison of Relative Clauses in English and Turkish is given. iiIn the Fifth Chapter. the method of the study is explained by describing the research design, selection of subjects, data collection and description of tests. After the reason for choosing the combination and the completion exercises is explained. The Methodological Assumptions and Analysis of the tests, Frequency and use of English relative pronouns, and finally limitations are given. In the Sixth Chapter, the data obtained from the tests given to Turkish students are statistically calculated and analysed. In the Seventh Chapter, the statistical interpretations are discussed. The following are the most significant conclusions reached in this study. a. The order of use of English relative pronouns can be related to their order of frequency. b. There is a significant difference within three groups of students (Advanced, Intermediate and Elementary Class) in using relative pronouns accurately. c. Using relative pronouns in the Completion test are easier than the relative pronouns in the Combination test for Turkish students studying English. d. Turkish students have difficulty in using English Relative Clauses because of the syntactic differences in English Relative Clauses. iii
