Özet (Çeviri)

The term“binomial”refers to a pair of words denoting a synonymous or related idea, and sequence of words pertain ing to the same form-class, placed at an identical level of syntactic hierarchy, and ordinarily connected by some kind of lexical link. Binomials carry some characteristics such as, fixed order, frozen words or freezes, conjoined words, an£ repetitive word pairs or reduplication. All these statements refer to binomials. The order of binomials is rigidly fixed. Both phonetic ana semantic factors can play a role in determining the binomials. When two words are conjoined, their order of appearance is typically free. Thus, both“book and lamp”and“lamp and book”are grammatical. In other cases, however, the order of binomial words is fixed. Examples include“this and that/that and this, free and easy/easy and free ”.Both seman tic and phonetic factors determine the ordering. For English, words that appear in the first position of binomials tend to refer to semantic concepts such as Here, Now, Adult, Male, Posit ive and Singular, whereas words appearing in second position tend to refer to opposite concepts. For example; 'Here and there' 'now and then'.parent and child' 'man and woman' 'happy and blessed' In terns of sound strueture, words in first position tend to be monosyllables and contain a word-initial segment that is low in oostruency,as well as word-medial high vowel. The tendency for conjuncts in first position to be monosyllabic is considered to be the strongest of the phonetic determinant of ordering; in cases where conjoinings pit two indapandantly motivated phonetic factors against one another, the monosylla bic constraint typically overrides, as in; 'boots and saddles' 'bread and butter*.rough and ready' The tendency for conjuncts in first position to contain a high vowel is also observed in English with regularity, particularly in the case of the high vowel (I) as in;' wig-wag '.flim-flam'.pitter-patter'.shilly-shally* 'sing-song' The internal order of the binomials is affected by semantic and phonological factors. Among the semantic factors studied, the strangest ordering tendencies are those connected with chronological, social and religious order priorities, social structure and the rhetorical tradition. further semantic ordering tendencies include the sequences“general-specific”,“weaker-intensifying*,1 and ”act ion-result". As to phonological factors, there is a clear tendency for the shorter member to be followed by the longer one. This tendency is also evident in the binomials whose membens have the same number of syllables. The lattar member is often phonologically longer because it has a long vowel in its accented syllable.
