oz MOBİL KULLANICILAR ÎÇİN DEVAMLI SORGULAR SİSTEMLERİNDE PROFİL İŞLEME Özen, Bahattin Yüksek Lisans, Bilgisayar Mühendisliği Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Prof. Dr. Asuman Doğaç Eylül 2001, 91 sayfa İnternet ve mobil cihazlar (örneğin, cep telefonları, Kişisel Dijital Asistanlar (KDA) ) hayatımızın vazgeçilmez birer parçası olmaya başlamıştır. Mobil ağ teknolojilerinin gelişmesiyle, İnternet'e kablosuz erişim mümkün olmaktadır. Mobil cihazlarla İnternet' e erişim, İnternet' i daha dinamik bir şekilde günlük hayatımızda kullanmamıza sebep olacaktır. Çok geniş bilgi kaynaklarını göz önüne alırsak, insanların ihtiyaçlarına en uygun bilgiye, istedikleri yerden ve istedikleri zaman erişmeleri önemli bir araştırma alanıdır. Mobil cihazların doğal limitleri, mobil müşterilere gönderilecek bilginin müşterilerin profillerine göre yüksek derecede kişiselleştirilmiş olmasını zorunlu kılmaktadır. Bu bilgi web sunucuları, şirket yerel ağları, elektronik mektup sunucuları gibi çok çeşitli kaynaklardan gelebilir. Ölçeklenebilirlik bu gibi sistemler için kritik önemli bir noktadır. Yani, kullanıcı sayısı dramatik şekilde arttığı zamansistem performası makul sınırlarda olmalıdır. Bir başka önemli nokta, kullanıcı profîllerinde-ki bu profiller SQL' in ilişkisel veritabanlarındaki sorgulama gücü kadar sorgulama gücü gerektirmektedir-yüksek derecede kişiselleştirilmiş bilginin ifade edilebilir olmasıdır. Son olarak, sorgu sonuçları kullanıcının isteklerine ve tercihlerine göre şekillendirilmelidir. Sorgular İnternet'ten getirilmiş dokümanlar üzerine uygulanacağından dolayı, bu dokümanların XML dokümanları olduğunu beklemek doğaldır. Bu tezde Mobil Kullanıcılar için Devamlı Sorgular (MKDS) projesinin bir parça sistemi olan profil işlemcisi sunulmaktadır. Mobil kullanıcılar için XML dokümanlarından yüksek derecede kişiselleştirilmiş bilgi sorgulanması bu Profil İşlemcisinin ana hedefidir. Kişiselleştirme kullanıcı profilleri ile sağlanır. Bu profiller kullanıcıların ilgilendikleri şeyleri bir XML sorgu dili olan XML-QL ile tanımlar. Problemin bu parçasına, bu teze eşlik eden tezde [Kilic 01] değinilmiştir. Bu çalışmada özellikle ölçeklenbilirlik problemi üzerine durulmuştur. Yüksek derecede ölçeklenebilirliği sağlamak için, sistemde aşırı derecede çok sayıda profil beklendiğinden dolayı dokümanların yerine kullanıcı profilleri indekslenmiştir. Bu şekilde verilen bir zamanda bir doküman üzerinde uygulanan sorguların hepsi bir sonlu durumlu makina (SDM) yaklaşımı ile doküman ayrıştırılırken paralel olarak çalıştırılmaktadır. Ayrıca aynı SDM gösterimine sahip sorgular gruplanır ve her grup için sadece bir sonlu durumlu makina yaratılır. Bu sistem performansına mükemmel katkıda bulunur.

ABSTRACT PROFILE PROCESSING IN CONTINUOUS QUERY SYSTEMS FOR MOBILE CLIENTS Özen, Bahattin M.S., Department of Computer Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Asuman Doğaç September 2001, 91 pages Internet and mobile devices (e.g., mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are becoming an integral part of our lives. With the advance of mobile network technologies, wireless access to the Internet has become possible. Accessing Internet by mobile devices leads us to use Internet more dynamically in our daily life. Considering vast information resources, accessing the most relevant information according to the requirements of people wherever and whenever they want is an important research area. The inherent limitations of mobile devices necessitate information to be delivered to mobile clients to be highly personalized according to their profiles. This information may be coming from a variety of resources like Web servers, company intranets, email servers. A critical issue for such systems is scalability, that is, the performance of the system should be in acceptable limits when the number of users increases dramatically. Another important issue is being able to express highly personalized information in the user profiles which requires a querying power as thatof SQL on relational databases. Finally, the results should be customized according to user needs and preferences. Since the queries will be executed on the documents fetched over the Internet, it is natural to expect the documents to be XML documents. This thesis presents a profile processor sub-system for the Continuous Queries for Mobile Clients (CQMC) project. The main objective of the Profile Processor is to produce highly personalized information from XML documents for mobile clients. Personalization is provided with user profiles which define user interests through an XML query language XML-QL. This part of the problem is addressed in an accompanying thesis [Kilic 01]. In this thesis, we specifically focus on scalability problem. To achieve high scalability, we index the user profiles rather than the documents because of the excessively large number of profiles expected in the system. In this way all queries that apply to a document at a given time are executed in parallel through a finite state machine (FSM) approach while parsing the document. Furthermore the queries that have the same FSM representation are grouped and only one finite state machine is created for each group which contributes to the excellent performance of the system.
