ABSTRACT This work attempts to analyse the basic components of acquiring vocabulary in the early years of infancy. The study, further, tries to make some reflections on vocabulary learning process in a foreign language (EFL). In the analysis of the early lexical development, the process from the early sound clusters to meaningful lexical units is treated with special emphasis on the determinants in the process. Children's strategies in referring to concepts and entities yield information as to the shape of the lexical development. In this framework, early uses of words in children are closely examined. The resulting overextensional and underextensional uses reveal some characteristics of this particular stage. The results from two independent case studies offer many instances where regularities in children's lexical development can be observed. Aware of the pending issues in the acquisition vocabulary in mother tongue, the work goes on to examine the parallel process in learning of foreign language. Within this concept, comparisons and contrasts between the two processes are observed following a through analysis.
