ABSTRACT In this work, a new model called“Noise Theory Model”concerning human number representation and the processes that manipulates them is presented. The model has a connectionist architecture which is one of the main approaches to model cognitive processes. The model is evaluated by comparing the results from the experimental studies concerning human arithmetic performance and results obtained from the model itself. In this respect, the model is investigated to see how it shows the behaviour described by three widely known effects, namely, problem size effect, error effects, and brain damage effects. According to noise theory number representation and the noise inherent in the cognitive system are the main factors that determines the effects in human arithmetic performance.
