This study examines the phenomenon of exile through the question of how a historically produced condition of exclusion is rearticulated and transferred from one people to another. Through a comparative analysis of Palestinian and American Jewish literatures, it explores how the experience of the Holocaust reappears in transformed yet resonant forms within post-Nakba Palestinian literature, and how the experiences of“otherness”and“invisibility”in the United States gradually shift from Jews to Palestinians. Within this framework, Giorgio Agamben's concepts of the state of exception, homo sacer, and bare life provide the theoretical ground of the comparison. These concepts reveal exile as more than a physical act of displacement; they illuminate it as a process of exclusion that suspends legal status, social belonging, and existential recognition. During the Holocaust, Jews were stripped of legal protection and reduced to mere biological existence—bare life. Palestinians, beginning with the Nakba, have been subjected to dispossession, refugeehood, legal indeterminacy, occupation, and conditions that confine life to a similarly precarious status across refugee camps and much of historic Palestine. In both cases, the state of exception functions as a governing logic that expels a people from legal protection and exposes them to sovereign arbitrariness. The American context, by contrast, is marked primarily by pressures of assimilation. Here exile manifests not through a strategy of physical annihilation, but through the erosion of cultural identity, enforced invisibility, and the effort to integrate into a dominant social order. Over time, as Jews became incorporated into American society, the position of the“other”increasingly came to be occupied by Arab-Palestinian subjects. This study does not seek to equate two distinct historical traumas or to compare degrees of suffering. Rather, it aims to render visible, through literature, the continuity and transformation of logics of domination and exclusion across different historical contexts.
