This study encompasses the identification and systematic inventorying of geosites located in the Kelkit Valley and its immediate surroundings within the administrative borders of Tokat province, and a multi-criteria quantitative analysis of the geotourism potentials of these identified assets. The research aims to record the region's geological heritage through a systematic inventorying and quantitative assessment, thereby creating a database for conservation and management strategies and sustainable tourism planning. The internationally recognized inventory and quantitative assessment method proposed by Brilha (2026) constitutes the main methodological framework of the research. In this context, the most important feature distinguishing this study from existing research in the literature is that the geological richness in the Tokat section of the Kelkit Valley has not been addressed with a holistic approach to date, and the thesis fills a significant gap in the literature by concretizing the geosites in the area as a whole for the first time. One of the most important methodological contributions the study offers to the literature is the applied quantitative assessment model. Accordingly, in order for conservation and management strategies to be placed on an objective basis, the Scientific Value (SV), Potential Educational Use (PEU), Potential Touristic Use (PTU), and Degradation Risk (DR) parameters of the geosites were first calculated separately. During this evaluation process, the existing weights in the methodology were converted into coefficients, thus ensuring that all calculations were standardized within a value range of 0-4. Subsequently, in order to compare the geosites with a multidimensional and integrated approach, the arithmetic mean of the SV, PEU, and PTU scores was taken, and the“Final Geosite Value”(FGV) was calculated with an equation derived specifically for the study. Thanks to this innovative and integrated index approach introduced to the literature, the total potentials of the geosites have been revealed not in a one-dimensional manner, but within a multifaceted and objective framework; a solid database has been created for future geotourism, geoconservation, and site management planning of the area. The research process, following the theoretical foundation grounded on a systematic literature review, was supported by intensive field observations. During the data collection phase, high-resolution aerial images obtained with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and a mobile device camera were used in appropriate situations. Geographic Information Systems technologies were utilized in the topographic preliminary examination and thematic map production processes; these processes were supported by the field observations conducted. Within this scope, visual verifications were made via Google Earth Pro and USGS EarthExplorer platforms, and all thematic mapping works were carried out using ArcGIS 10.8.2 software. As a result of the field studies, a total of 15 geosites were identified in the Kelkit Valley and its surroundings; 10 of them with the highest representativeness and data integrity were included in the final quantitative assessment process. According to the calculated FGV scores, all examined geosites fall into the“Moderate – National”category on the significance scale. According to the analysis results; Reşadiye Geothermal and Travertine Area (3.00), Zinav Canyon (2.88), and Efkerit Valley (2.83) stood out as the geosites with the highest potential in the region with their FGV values. The Degradation Risk (DR) results, analyzed as a variable independent of the FGV, showed that the vast majority of the geosites in the field (6 items) are in the“Low Risk”group. While Dilimkayalar (1.20) was determined as the lowest risk area; Reşadiye Geothermal and Travertine Area (3.35) was recorded as the only geosite falling into the“High Risk”category. These data, while proving that the geosites in the study area are generally in the low-moderate risk band, quantitatively reveal the necessity of preparing urgent conservation and sustainable management plans for high-risk areas at the local level. Accordingly, the study recommends that Gündoğdu Waterfall, Patırdak Waterfall, and Kızılkayalar, which do not currently have a legal conservation status but have a potential value that can be increased, along with Reşadiye Geothermal and Travertine Area and Sisma Cave and Travertine Site, which require urgent intervention in line with the risk findings, should be registered and taken under protection within the scope of National Parks Law No. 2873. Furthermore, it is foreseen that geotourism activities can be further developed with physical improvements and sustainable environmental arrangements to be carried out in the identified sites; in this way, it is anticipated that geoconservation practices can be transformed into an alternative socio-economic development opportunity for the local people.
