This thesis presents a parametric investigation into the influence of the design parameters of Friction Pendulum System (FPS) isolators and the seismic hazard level on both structural performance and non-structural component safety. In contrast to conventional force-based design philosophies, base isolation seeks to elongate the fundamental period of the structural system, thereby attenuating the transmission of seismic excitation to the superstructure and facilitating the attainment of post-earthquake operational continuity — an objective that is increasingly emphasized within contemporary performance-based earthquake engineering frameworks. A five-story reinforced concrete building, representative of typical mid-rise construction, was adopted as the reference model. A comprehensive parametric matrix was constructed by systematically varying three governing parameters: the radius of curvature (R = 4 m and 6 m), the coefficient of friction (μ = 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08), and the spectral acceleration ordinate (S₁ = 0.30, 0.40, and 0.50), yielding a total of 18 distinct isolator configurations. Seismic demand was characterized by a suite of 11 real ground motion records, selected and scaled in accordance with the provisions of the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY-2018), with particular emphasis on near-fault directivity effects. Nonlinear response history analyses were carried out in SAP2000, resulting in a total of 1,188 simulations. The response parameters examined include peak isolator displacements, peak floor accelerations, and inter-story drift ratios, which were interpreted within a multi-criteria performance assessment framework. The results reveal a pronounced trade-off between competing demand quantities. An increase in the radius of curvature lengthens the effective isolation period and consequently mitigates floor acceleration and inter-story drift demands in the superstructure; however, this benefit is accompanied by an increase of approximately 15–20% in isolator displacement demand. Conversely, an increase in the coefficient of friction substantially attenuates isolator displacements and drift demands by enhancing hysteretic energy dissipation, yet induces a rise in floor accelerations on the order of 45–50% due to the transmission of higher-frequency content to the superstructure. Elevation of the seismic hazard level amplifies all demand quantities in a broadly monotonic manner; nonetheless, all configurations investigated remained within the limit states prescribed by TBDY-2018. On the basis of a multi-criteria evaluation, the configuration defined by R = 4 m and μ = 0.06 was identified as providing the most balanced performance under moderate seismic hazard conditions, simultaneously satisfying the demands imposed on isolator displacement, floor acceleration, and inter-story drift. Beyond the quantitative findings, this study underscores that the design of seismically isolated structures cannot be rationally predicated on the minimization of a single demand parameter; rather, it necessitates the concurrent consideration of multiple, and often conflicting, performance indicators. Accordingly, the dissertation advances a set of practice-oriented assessment recommendations tailored to varying seismic hazard levels, thereby contributing to the refinement of parameter selection procedures in the design of base-isolated structures and offering a methodological basis for future research on performance-based isolation design.
