Özet

İğrenme uyandırdığı tepkilerle ve yarattığı çağrışımlarla sanat camiasında eşi benzeri çok olmayan bir his. Tarih boyunca yanlış anlaşılıp yanlış gösterilmiş bir his olsa da düşüncem şudur ki iğrenme bir duygu olarak diğer duygularda bulunmayan bir ağırlığa sahip, ve sanattaki kullanımı anlamaya değer olmakla kalmayıp ayrıca psikoloji, estetik, ve kendisine ayrılan iğrenme estetiği dalını anlamak için hayati değerde. Kendisinden daha uygun kabul edilen başka duygulara kıyasla iğrenme, has kuvveti ve hatta hoyratlığıyla bazı temaları kendine has, diğer duygularda görülenden çok daha farklı bir şekilde taşıma kabiliyetine sahip. Disgust is a rather unique feeling in the field of arts, with the type of reactions it evokes in the mind and the associations it tends to create. While it has been highly misunderstood and mischaracterized throughout history, I believe disgust as an emotion carries a type of weight unlike any other, and its use in arts is not only worth exploring but crucial in terms of making better use of psychology, aesthetics, and understanding the newly-formed discipline of dramatic disgust that is solely dedicated to it. It is an emotion that is much different from the others that are considered much more appropriate for the field of arts, yet its raw power and even vulgar nature have the effect of carrying certain themes in a manner that is very uniquely its own and not found in the others. In this thesis, my aim is to establish a usable framework on the concepts of disgust and the grotesque in a theoretical context, and evaluate three plays by English playwright Philip Ridley based on this established theoretical framework. I believe that examining closely the unique ways disgust and the grotesque —the“uglier”emotions and concepts— are used to further progress the narrative, tell the story, and establish a solid tone can help in establishing a place for both of these concepts in the field of aesthetics.
