Güney, Muhittin, Omar b. Hattâh Until his caliphate, Master's Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Sarıçam, 83 s. SUMMARY By this study, we are hoping to be helpful to the understanding of Hz. Omar's personality and his life before caliphacy, who carried out this duty through the turning point of the Islamic history. He is the son of Hattab of Beni Adiy family that were acting as an embassy in Mecca city society. He gained some privilige among the Mecca community dating from his childhood due to being belong to a high class family. In his teens he took his father's camels to graze and was educated with the honourable thoughts of generousity, honesty, courage and justice. Besides these he has shown remarkable successes in the science of generations, weapons, wrestling, riding and oratory. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) declared his divine notification, Omar objected to him fiercely, behaved the muslims very rudely, but became a muslim when he set off to carry out the duty of killing the Prophet, which was given to him by the unbeliever leaders. Muslims gained courage on this event and started to pray in Kaaba with community publicly. When permission given tor migration he emigrated to Medinah. There he helped solve some political and economical problems of the newly founded state. He participated all wars of Hz. Muhammed. When Hudeybiye agreement was signed he publicly asked the prophet why he had accepted such conditions. On Hz. Muhammed's death, he supported Ebubekir's being the caliph and was among the first ones to accept his caliphacy. He undertook important tasks through Ebubekir's caliphacy. He got married eleven times before and after Islam. Among his wives was Ummu Gulsum, granddaughter of the Prophet and daughter of AIL He had nine sons and five daughters, total fourteen children, from these marriages. He also became the father in love of the Prophet through getting his daughter Hafsa married to him. He was among the ten sahabies who were heralded with cenneh by Hz. Muhammed. In the time of Hz. Omer's caliphacy; the secand caliph of the state, a lot of conguers took place, and new organisations were held in the structure of the state. As a result, to critcise his time, his character and aspects of his life must be known well in advance. Otherwise, the comments on this period of Islamic history will be insufficient 83
