ABSTRACT Özçelik, Sedat, Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri: His Life and The Role İn History OfHadith, Master's Thesis, Superviser: İsmail Hakkı Ünal, Prof. Dr., 172 pp. Ibn Shihab az-Zuhri is one of the most prominent scholars who lies in the central in establishing (tathbit) the hadith discipline and codifying (tadwin) it. Personally he had the characteristics of vigor, attention, perception, etc. which a scholar must have. Morally he also had the virtues such as uprightness, telling the truth, devoting himself to the knowledge which deserve to be praised. Besides, he would practise his belief and be a pattern for those neighbouring him. In legal matters he was referred to pick up mind. He is criticized by some Western scholars studying on Islam because of the close relationship with Umayyad Rule. These criticisms were tried to be derived from some narrations, but they have no whatever any convincing proof. We have not yet come across any explanation against him except the accusations of scholars ofal-Jarh wa'l- Ta'dil against his method of relying on irsal and tadlis. On these two matters, in our opinion, the hadiths he transmitted doesn't deserve to be ignored. He is one of the most remarkable muhaddiths of the period of codification (tadwin). His isnad application and efforts it to establishing in hadith is also very significant. His accounts which are approximately two tousands are available in hadith collection now. Moreover, his narrations have taken special attention by some scholars and been memorized. Unfortunately, the editions and other written books of his which compiled all his accounts have not been available nowadays.
