Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, with far-reaching implications not only for the environment but also for economic stability, public health, and social equity. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and shifting climate patterns underscore the urgency of coordinated action across all sectors of society. While governments play a central role in formulating and implementing climate policies, the private sector has a strategic role in complementing these efforts through innovation, investment, and operational transformation. In particular, industries characterized by high levels of consumption and production bear a significant responsibility in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The ability of businesses to monitor, report, and reduce their carbon footprint is critical to achieving global sustainability targets, including those outlined in the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, the development of corporate GHG inventories has become an essential practice, enabling organizations to systematically assess their environmental impact and identify opportunities for improvement. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the corporate GHG inventory of a Turkey-based retail company specializing in home improvement and construction products. The analysis focuses on the year 2024 and is conducted in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the most widely recognized international standard for GHG accounting. Emissions are categorized into three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from energy consumption), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions). The methodology employs an Excel-based calculation tool, integrating operational data verified through invoices and official documents to ensure transparency and traceability. The GHG Protocol provides a robust framework for quantifying and managing GHG emissions across organizational boundaries. It distinguishes between three scopes of emissions: - Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as fuel combustion in company vehicles and on-site energy generation. - Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the consumption of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling. - Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, including those from transportation, procurement, waste management, and business travel. To construct the GHG inventory, the company collected operational data from various departments, including logistics, procurement, facilities management, and human resources. These data were validated using invoices, utility bills, and other official records. Emission factors were sourced from the latest GHG Protocol guidelines and supplemented with region-specific data where applicable. The Excel-based tool facilitated the calculation of emissions by multiplying activity data (e.g., liters of fuel consumed, kilowatt-hours of electricity used) by corresponding emission factors. The analysis identified several key sources of emissions: - Energy Consumption: Electricity and natural gas used in retail stores, warehouses, and administrative offices. - Transportation and Logistics: Emissions from delivery vehicles, employee commuting, and third-party logistics providers. - Procurement and Supply Chain: Emissions associated with the production and transportation of goods purchased by the company. - Waste Management: Emissions from the disposal and treatment of solid and hazardous waste. - Business Travel: Emissions from air travel, hotel stays, and other travel-related activities. The calculated emissions for 2024 are as follows: - Scope 1: 2.425,63 tons CO₂ - Scope 2: 15.220,76 tons CO₂ - Scope 3: 8.930 tons CO₂ These figures indicate that the majority of the company's carbon footprint is attributable to indirect emissions, particularly those related to electricity consumption and supply chain activities. The high level of Scope 2 emissions reflects the energy-intensive nature of retail operations, including lighting, heating, cooling, and equipment usage. The findings of the GHG inventory have significant implications for the company's sustainability strategy. Reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions requires targeted interventions in energy efficiency and operational optimization. The company has initiated several measures, including: - Equipment Optimization: Upgrading to energy-efficient lighting, HVAC systems, and machinery. Renewable Energy: Exploring the feasibility of installing solar panels and purchasing green electricity. - Electric Vehicles: Evaluating the use of electric delivery vehicles to reduce emissions from logistics operations. In addition, the company is engaging with suppliers to promote sustainable practices and reduce Scope 3 emissions. This includes encouraging the use of low-carbon materials, optimizing transportation routes, and implementing waste reduction initiatives. Implementing a comprehensive GHG inventory presents several challenges, including data availability, accuracy, and integration across departments. Ensuring consistent and reliable data collection requires robust internal processes and cross-functional collaboration. Moreover, the dynamic nature of emission factors and regulatory requirements necessitates ongoing updates to the calculation methodology. Despite these challenges, the GHG inventory offers numerous opportunities for value creation. By identifying emission hotspots, the company can prioritize investments in sustainability and enhance its operational resilience. Furthermore, transparent reporting of GHG emissions strengthens stakeholder trust and supports compliance with emerging regulations, such as the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The corporate GHG inventory serves as a foundational tool for climate action and sustainable development. It enables businesses to quantify their environmental impact, set reduction targets, and track progress over time. For the Turkey-based retail company analyzed in this study, the inventory has revealed critical insights into the sources and magnitude of emissions, guiding strategic decisions in energy management, logistics, and supply chain engagement. As climate change continues to pose existential risks, the role of the private sector in driving mitigation efforts cannot be overstated. By embracing GHG accounting and integrating sustainability into core business practices, companies can contribute meaningfully to global climate goals while enhancing their competitiveness and long-term viability. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its GHG inventory to include additional Scope 3 categories, such as product use and end-of-life emissions. It also aims to implement a digital platform for real-time monitoring of emissions, enabling more agile and data-driven decision-making. Collaboration with industry peers, government agencies, and academic institutions will be essential to advancing best practices and fostering innovation in GHG management. In conclusion, the development and utilization of corporate GHG inventories represent a critical step toward a low-carbon economy. By aligning environmental responsibility with business strategies, companies can play a transformative role in addressing climate change and building a sustainable future for all.
