This study aims to experimentally investigate the relationship between the compressive strength, drillability behavior, and water-related performance of concrete produced in different strength classes. In conventional practice, the in-situ determination of concrete strength primarily relies on destructive and non-destructive testing methods. However, each of these methods has inherent limitations in terms of accuracy, applicability, and representativeness. Destructive testing methods require core extraction from existing structures, which may cause irreversible structural damage, disturb stress distribution, and are often limited by accessibility constraints and cost considerations, particularly in large-scale infrastructural systems. On the other hand, widely used non-destructive methods such as rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests are strongly influenced by surface conditions, curing history, carbonation depth, moisture content, and material heterogeneity. These influencing factors may lead to variability in measurement results and uncertainties in the reliable estimation of in-situ compressive strength. Due to these limitations, there is an increasing need for alternative testing approaches that are practical, reliable, minimally invasive, and capable of reflecting the intrinsic mechanical properties of concrete under both laboratory and field conditions. In this context, the present study focuses on drilling-based testing methods and investigates the relationship between the drillability characteristics of concrete and its compressive strength development. The potential of drilling parameters, such as drilling rate, penetration resistance, and drilling depth, as indirect indicators of concrete strength is evaluated through a comprehensive experimental program conducted under controlled laboratory conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing whether drilling-based parameters can provide consistent correlations across different strength classes and curing ages. Within the scope of the study, three concrete strength classes (C20, C35, and C50) were selected to represent a broad range of mechanical performance levels commonly used in structural and infrastructural applications. This selection enables the investigation of drillability behavior across low-, medium-, and high-strength concretes with distinct microstructural characteristics. Concrete mixtures were designed in accordance with relevant standards, and particular attention was paid to ensuring consistency, repeatability, and comparability among all mixtures. Mix proportions were optimized to achieve the target strength classes while maintaining similar aggregate grading curves to minimize the influence of aggregate distribution on drilling performance. The aggregates used in each concrete class were characterized through sieve analysis, methylene blue test, specific gravity, and water absorption tests in order to evaluate their physical quality, cleanliness, and suitability. These characterization procedures ensured that variations in drillability behavior could be primarily attributed to differences in cementitious matrix properties rather than aggregate-related inconsistencies. In addition, the cement incorporated into the mixtures was experimentally characterized in terms of specific gravity, Blaine fineness, and early- and later-age compressive strength properties to better understand its contribution to hydration kinetics and strength development. Furthermore, the chemical analysis certificates of three different chemical admixtures used in the mixtures were examined to verify their compliance with applicable standards and to ensure compatibility within the cementitious system. Fresh concrete properties were carefully controlled throughout the experimental program to minimize the influence of external variables on test results. The water-to-cement ratio and chemical admixture dosages were adjusted according to the target strength classes, and workability parameters were evaluated using slump or spread tests. Unit weight, ambient temperature, and fresh concrete temperature were monitored and recorded during casting to provide consistent production conditions. This systematic monitoring enabled a more reliable interpretation of experimental results and reduced the potential impact of uncontrolled environmental variables on both strength and drilling performance. To evaluate hardened concrete properties, compressive strength tests were conducted on 100 × 100 × 100 mm cube specimens at curing ages of 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days to capture both early-age and long-term strength development trends. Vicat setting time tests were performed to assess the early-age setting behavior of the cementitious system and to better interpret initial drilling resistance at early curing stages. Additionally, water penetration depth tests were carried out at 28 days to evaluate permeability-related performance and durability characteristics of the concretes. Since permeability is closely associated with pore structure refinement and microcrack formation, its inclusion in the experimental program allowed for a more comprehensive assessment of the relationship between mechanical performance and internal structure. All experimental procedures were performed in accordance with the relevant standards, and each test was repeated on a sufficient number of specimens to ensure statistical reliability, reproducibility, and meaningful data interpretation. The drillability behavior of the concrete specimens was evaluated using the Sievers' J Miniature Drill Test. Drilling tests were conducted at curing ages of 7, 14, and 28 days in order to monitor the evolution of drilling resistance in relation to ongoing hydration and microstructural densification. Prior to testing, the cube specimens were split to expose fresh and representative internal surfaces, thereby minimizing the influence of surface carbonation or finishing effects. Drilling operations were performed at nine different locations on each specimen to account for the heterogeneous nature of concrete and to enhance the statistical representativeness of the measured drilling parameters. Drill depth and drilling rate values obtained from the tests were quantitatively analyzed and compared with compressive strength results for each strength class and curing age. The experimental results indicated that compressive strength increased consistently with increasing concrete strength class and curing age, reflecting the progressive hydration and densification of the cementitious matrix. In contrast, drilling rate values exhibited a systematic decreasing trend as strength increased. A clear inverse relationship between compressive strength and drilling rate was observed, particularly at 28 days of curing, where the correlation was found to be stronger and more stable. At earlier ages, greater variability in drilling rate results was detected due to the ongoing hydration process, incomplete microstructural development, and the presence of higher capillary porosity within the cement matrix. These findings demonstrate that the drillability behavior of concrete is significantly influenced by both strength class and curing age, and that drilling-based parameters are sensitive to changes in internal microstructure, pore refinement, and matrix stiffness. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that drilling-based testing methods provide meaningful, quantifiable, and repeatable parameters that reflect the mechanical behavior and structural integrity of concrete. The observed correlations suggest that drillability characteristics can be effectively utilized as a complementary approach for compressive strength evaluation, particularly in cases where conventional destructive or non-destructive testing methods are limited, impractical, or economically inefficient. Furthermore, the integration of drilling-based assessment techniques into quality control and in-situ evaluation practices may enhance the reliability of strength estimation procedures in structural and infrastructural applications. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the development of more robust in-situ concrete assessment methodologies and to support future experimental and applied studies focusing on alternative strength estimation methods for cement-based materials.
