Handel'in Rinaldo operasında“Lascia ch'io pianga”(Almirena) aryası, yalın melodisi ve duygusal yoğunluğuyla Barok müziğin özlü ifadesini temsil ederken,“Cara sposa”(Rinaldo) aryası, mezzo-soprano tınısının sıcaklığıyla karakterin umutsuzluğunu güçlü biçimde yansıtmaktadır.
This thesis investigates the formal, functional, and interpretive evolution of two principal operatic forms aria and recitative within the contrasting musical and aesthetic frameworks of the Baroque and Romantic periods. By examining George Frideric Handel's Rinaldo (1711) and Charles Gounod's Sapho (1851), the study aims to reveal how these forms developed across eras, with a particular emphasis on their role in shaping vocal expression, dramatic structure, and stylistic identity. The focus on mezzo-soprano repertoire further provides a performance-based lens through which the transformations in vocal writing and characterization are critically evaluated. Opera, as a multidimensional art form combining music, text, and stagecraft, has long reflected the aesthetic priorities and socio-cultural dynamics of its time. Aria and recitative, two fundamental components of operatic expression, have not only served as vehicles for narrative and emotional projection but also functioned as stylistic markers of historical periods. The Baroque era, with its emphasis on formal balance, affective representation, and ornamentation, contrasts significantly with the Romantic era's prioritization of psychological depth, harmonic expansion, and symphonic texture. Within this context, the primary objective of the study is to explore how these two vocal forms function musically and dramaturgically across different periods, and how the mezzo-soprano voice has been employed to embody and project these expressive goals. The study employs a qualitative methodology based on extensive literature review and detailed score analysis. Selected arias and their corresponding recitative passages from Rinaldo and Sapho are analyzed with regard to their formal structures, melodic profiles, harmonic treatment, orchestration, and dramatic functions. The research is further informed by historical performance practice, voice classification analysis, and dramaturgical interpretation. Specific attention is given to how musical form and vocal writing serve the dramaturgical intent of the operas, particularly through the lens of mezzo-soprano roles. Handel's Rinaldo, considered a milestone in early 18th-century opera seria, demonstrates the Baroque approach to formal clarity and expressive symmetry. Aria form in this period was most often realized through the da capo (A–B–A) structure, where the return of the initial section allowed for elaborate ornamentation and interpretive freedom. In Rinaldo, the aria“Lascia ch'io pianga,”sung by Almirena, epitomizes the Baroque ideal of affective purity: a simple melodic line supported by sparse harmonic accompaniment and a slow tempo conveys the depth of the character's emotional suffering. Likewise, Rinaldo's“Cara sposa”aria, composed for a castrato (today typically sung by a mezzo-soprano or countertenor), uses the warmth of the voice type to express profound grief and determination. Baroque recitative appears in two primary forms: recitativo secco and recitativo accompagnato. The former, accompanied only by continuo instruments (harpsichord and cello), delivers narrative content in a speech-like rhythm, bridging arias and facilitating dramatic continuity. The latter, used for moments of heightened emotional intensity, includes full orchestral accompaniment to intensify the dramatic delivery. In Rinaldo, both forms are used extensively and with clear distinction, reflecting the dramaturgical logic of the era. Handel's orchestration in Rinaldo is emblematic of the Baroque palette: while limited in size, the orchestra plays a crucial role in defining mood and supporting vocal lines. String sections, continuo, and selected wind instruments (such as oboes and trumpets) provide affective color and rhythmic momentum. The performance style demands clarity, ornamentation mastery, and stylistic restraint. By contrast, Gounod's Sapho operates within the expressive and structural ideals of mid-19th-century French Romantic opera. The boundaries between aria and recitative become more porous; recitative often blends seamlessly into lyrical passages, and orchestration assumes a more active, expressive role. The aria“Ô ma lyre immortelle,”performed by the character Sapho (mezzo-soprano), exemplifies this stylistic evolution. Rich in chromaticism, harmonic tension, and sweeping melodic lines, the aria projects the inner world of a tormented poet whose personal and political struggles intertwine. The orchestral writing here does not merely accompany but mirrors and amplifies the character's emotional state. Romantic recitatives, while still functioning as vehicles for narrative progression, differ significantly in musical character from their Baroque counterparts. Instead of dry, continuo-based support, Romantic recitatives often feature lush orchestral textures, dynamic shifts, and leitmotivic elements that reinforce character development. In Sapho, these transitions are organically integrated into the score, supporting the psychological realism and emotional immediacy that define Romantic dramaturgy. From a performance perspective, Gounod's vocal writing for mezzo-soprano demands not only tonal richness and control across registers but also heightened sensitivity to text inflection, dramatic pacing, and orchestral interplay. The singer must navigate wide dynamic ranges, intricate phrasing, and expressive declamation characteristics that reflect the broader Romantic ethos of vocal realism and emotional truth. The comparative analysis reveals stark contrasts between the two periods in terms of compositional design, performance expectations, and dramaturgical strategies. Baroque arias emphasize symmetry, formal clarity, and ornamentation, often requiring singers to demonstrate virtuosic agility and embellishment skills. Romantic arias, on the other hand, prioritize linear expressivity, dramatic integration, and orchestral depth, demanding a different set of vocal and interpretive competencies. Recitative in the Baroque period serves primarily as a structural bridge, guiding the narrative between arias with minimal harmonic complexity. In the Romantic period, recitative is reimagined as an emotionally charged narrative force, integrated into the larger dramatic fabric of the work. Orchestration follows a similar trajectory: from the restrained continuo-centric ensemble of the Baroque era to the fully orchestrated, harmonically dense, and emotionally suggestive soundscape of Romantic opera. In terms of vocal writing, mezzo-soprano roles in Rinaldo and Sapho illustrate the evolving demands placed on performers. While Baroque roles require purity of tone, stylistic agility, and ornamentation control, Romantic roles demand a more expansive vocal color palette, dynamic flexibility, and dramatic immersion. This study concludes that understanding the historical and stylistic distinctions between Baroque and Romantic opera is essential for informed performance practice. A singer's awareness of period-specific conventions not only in terms of vocal technique but also in terms of dramaturgical function and stylistic aesthetics has a direct impact on interpretative depth and authenticity. In this context, mezzo-soprano roles offer a unique perspective for examining these shifts, as they often occupy central dramatic positions and demand both technical finesse and expressive maturity. The findings of this thesis contribute to the broader field of musicological inquiry by highlighting how operatic forms evolve in dialogue with cultural and artistic transformations. Moreover, the study serves as a practical resource for vocal students, coaches, and scholars, encouraging a more nuanced and historically grounded approach to operatic performance.
