Journalism is among the professions most affected by new communication technologies and capitalist production dynamics. In the age of cognitive capitalism, social media platforms, which are at the core of these technologies, are not only transforming the news production practices of journalists but also redefining their labor processes. Platforms such as X, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have provided journalists with a space to share news and content they produce relatively freely with large audiences, quickly and easily, without needing substantial capital, expensive technical equipment, or a corporate structure. These platforms, which have gained a significant position in the journalism ecosystem, are on the other hand owned by global capitalist technology companies that hold control and power in the economic and political spheres due to their role in capital accumulation processes and their monopolistic position over markets. Journalists who maintain their professional practices on social media platforms, which are both means of communication and means of production, create surplus value through their digital labor by producing commodities that carry exchange value for the capital accumulation processes of these platforms. The thesis aims to examine the dynamics of the assumed digital labor exploitation arising from the premise that journalists who produce, share, and engage with news and content on social media platforms receive lower incomes compared to the surplus value they generate, often expending unpaid digital labor. It further seeks to investigate the possible effects of this situation on journalistic practices and its reflections on their private lives. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 30 media professionals in Turkey who independently produce news and content by expending digital labor and time on social media platforms, and 7 semi-structured questions prepared in line with the scope and objectives of the research were directed to the participants. In this context, it was aimed to holistically address the following within the framework of the concept of digital labor, based on the experiences and views of the journalists: the effects of platformization on news production and distribution processes; the factors seen as the reason for the unpaid nature of digital labor; the reputation of the profession; work/private life balance; the multiple job descriptions of journalists; and the social and structural dimensions of the profession such as digital labor-based income models, unionization, organization, social rights, job security, and wage policies. The data analysis process of this thesis was carried out using MAXQDA 24 Analytics Pro software, and the findings were interpreted within the framework of seven main themes. The main conclusion of this thesis is that with the continuation of journalism on social media platforms, the labor of journalists - who have become part of the digital laboring class -is subjected to digital labor exploitation in a manner dependent on the political economy structure of the platforms and their algorithms. Digital labor exploitation affects journalists' identities, production, and private lives in various ways, leading to their exploitation on cognitive, emotional, and physical levels within the news production processes.
