Ex situ yöntemde silan bileşikleri önceden sentezlenmiş MUF reçinesine ilave edilirken, in situ yöntemde silan bileşikleri reçine sentezi sırasında kontrollü şekilde sisteme dahil edilmiştir.

Formaldehyde-based thermosetting resins, particularly melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins, have been widely used as adhesives in the wood-based panel industry due to their favorable bonding properties, cost-effectiveness, and compatibility with wood materials. However, the utilization of such resins has raised growing environmental and health concerns, primarily because of the release of free formaldehyde from cured products. Formaldehyde is a volatile organic compound (VOC) recognized for its potential health hazards; prolonged exposure may lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and even carcinogenic effects. Consequently, many countries have established stringent regulations that limit formaldehyde emissions from wood-based products, leading to an increasing demand for resins with improved environmental performance. The development of low-emission or formaldehyde-free binders has thus become a crucial research direction in the adhesive and composite materials industries. Despite significant progress in resin chemistry, conventional approaches have shown limited effectiveness in completely eliminating formaldehyde release. Therefore, novel strategies involving molecular-level modification of resin structures are essential. Organofunctional silane compounds have gained attention as potential modifiers because of their unique dual reactivity: silane groups can form covalent bonds with inorganic substrates or hydroxyl-rich materials like wood, while organofunctional groups (such as amino, epoxy, or methacryloxy) can react with polymeric or resin matrices. This dual functionality enables silanes to enhance interfacial adhesion and potentially capture free formaldehyde through chemicalinteractions. Building upon the theoretical background and literature evidence regarding the use of organofunctional silanes in formaldehyde-based resin systems, previously published findings by the author provided an experimental foundation for the present doctoral research. A chemical modification process was carried out using organofunctional silane compounds to reduce formaldehyde emission in MUF resins. The mechanism that provides this reduction in formaldehyde emission is thought to be due to the possible cross-linking between the silane compounds incorporated into the structure during the condensation step and the functional groups of the MUF resin. Increasing the 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) content results in a slight increase in formaldehyde emissions, while increasing the 3-(2-Aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS) content results in a decrease. In contrast, the two amino groups in the AEAPTMS molecule have the potential to facilitate more efficient and numerous chemical reactions with the resin matrix. This double amino group binds formaldehyde molecules more strongly and permanently, resulting in a consistent and significant reduction in formaldehyde emissions with increasing AEAPTMS usage rates. As a result, while APTES provides a lower reduction in formaldehyde emissions due to its limited functionality, AEAPTMS's double amino group structure promotes the effective binding of formaldehyde, thereby reducing emissions. It has been determined that silane-modified MUF resins containing AEAPTMS reduce formaldehyde emissions by 56.8% compared to the reference MUF resin (Karaca ve diğ, 2025). These results clearly demonstrated that amino-functional silane type and functional group density play a critical role in formaldehyde emission control and provided the scientific rationale for the systematic and expanded investigation carried out within the scope of this doctoral thesis. In this doctoral research, amino-functional silane compounds were employed to modify MUF resins in order to reduce formaldehyde emissions. Four different silane compounds N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropylmethyldimethoxysilane(AEAPMDMS), 3-(2-Aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS), 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES), and bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl)amine (BTMSPA) were selected based on their molecular structures and the number of amino groups attached to the silicon atom. The amino functionality of these compounds is crucial because it allows for potential reaction with free formaldehyde and enhances crosslinking efficiency during resin curing. Each silane compound exhibits a distinct configuration in terms of amino group count and the distance between the amino functionality and the silicon atom, which significantly influences the reactivity, crosslinking behavior, and modification efficiency of the MUF system. The MUF resin was synthesized following the conventional alkaline–acidic–alkaline procedure, ensuring a balanced polycondensation reaction between urea, melamine, and formaldehyde. The base resin contained approximately 5% melamine and had a solid content of about 60%. Silane modification was carried out using both in situ and ex situ approaches. In the ex situ method, silane compounds were introduced into presynthesized MUF resins, offering a simpler and more practical route for industrial applications. However, the incorporation efficiency and chemical bonding between silane molecules and the resin matrix can be limited in this approach. In contrast, the in situ method involved adding silane compounds directly during resin synthesis, allowing for more controlled reactions and better integration of silane moieties into the resin backbone. By applying both modification strategies, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence of silane type and application method on resin performance. Modified MUF resins were prepared with silane addition levels of 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight. The physicochemical properties of each formulation, including solid content, pH, viscosity, density, and curing time, were carefully measured to assess quality and processing behavior. Increasing silane content generally resulted in higher viscosity and longer curing time, likely due to the enhanced crosslinking potential and the steric hindrance introduced by the silane structures. Spectroscopic analyses were conducted to investigate the chemical structure and confirm successful modification. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to identify characteristic functional groups, while 13C-NMR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy provided detailed insights into molecular changes and new bond formations. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) verified the presence and distribution of silicon within the resin matrix, confirming effective silane incorporation. Thermal analyses using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were employed to evaluate thermal stability and curing behavior. Rheological measurements were performed using a rotational rheometer to determine the viscoelastic properties, while mechanical testing of cured samples assessed tensile and bonding strength. Laboratory-scale particleboards were produced using these modified MUF resins to evaluate the practical implications of the modification on real wood-based composites. Panels were manufactured in accordance with EN 312 standards, targeting P1-grade general-purpose boards. The properties examined included internal bond strength, thickness swelling, water absorption, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. Formaldehyde emission was measured using the perforator method according to EN 12460-5 standards, ensuring reliable comparison between modified and control samples. The results revealed that silane modification significantly influenced the physicochemical and mechanical behavior of MUF resins. Among the four silane types, AEAPTMS demonstrated the most pronounced effect on reducing formaldehyde emissions. This compound, which possesses five functional terminal groups, exhibited the strongest interaction with formaldehyde molecules and resin intermediates, effectively lowering the concentration of unreacted formaldehyde. At a 5% addition level, in situ modification with AEAPTMS achieved a remarkable reduction of up to 67.95% in formaldehyde emissions compared with the unmodified control resin. In contrast, the ex situ modification yielded a more modest yet notable reduction of approximately 19.8%, highlighting that chemical integration during synthesis plays a critical role in achieving superior emission control. The comparative analysis between the two modification strategies indicated that in situ silane addition enables more uniform distribution, improved chemical bonding, and better compatibility within the resin matrix, ultimately resulting in more stable and durable performance. Overall, this study demonstrated that amino-functional silane modification represents an effective and scalable strategy for producing environmentally friendly MUF resins with significantly reduced formaldehyde emissions. By systematically comparing four distinct silane types and two modification techniques, the research provided comprehensive insights into the structure–property–performance relationships governing silane-modified thermosetting systems. The findings emphasize the potential of AEAPTMS, in particular, as a high-performance additive for sustainable adhesive technologies. The developed approach not only meets contemporary environmental regulations but also enhances the performance characteristics of MUFbased wood composites. Given its strong applicability and ease of integration into existing production lines, the proposed modification strategy offers a promising pathway for the wood panel industry to transition toward safer and more sustainable adhesive systems without compromising mechanical integrity or production efficiency. Future research could focus on exploring hybrid modification systems combining silane chemistry with nanomaterials or bio-based additives to further enhance the ecological and functional performance of next-generation formaldehyde-free or ultra-low-emission adhesives.
