Özet

Akdeniz tarih boyunca birçok kültüre ev sahipliği yapmış ve kültürler arası iletişimi ve etkileşimi mümkün kılarak kendi çevresinde bir medeniyet havzası oluşturmuştur. Akdeniz medeniyeti olarak adlandırabileceğimiz bu büyük coğrafya birçok farklı etnik, dini ve kültürel değeri bünyesinde barındırırken aynı zamanda bu farklılıklar arasındaki geçişkenlik nedeniyle birçok ortak kültürel öğe oluşmasına neden olmuştur. Akdeniz'in iklim özellikleri, coğrafi ve jeolojik yapısı mimari dokuyu belirleyen önemli etkenler olmuşlardır.

The Mediterranean has harboured many cultures throughout history and created a basin of civilisation around itself by enabling communication and interaction between cultures. While this large geography, which we can call the Mediterranean civilisation, embodies many different ethnic, religious and cultural values, it has also caused the formation of many common cultural elements in different geographies within the Mediterranean due to the transparency between these differences. While oceans and seas typically serve to separate distinct landmasses, the Mediterranean functions paradoxically, separating lands on one hand while simultaneously uniting distant shores on the other. It acts as a connective tissue, providing an ease of movement that facilitates interaction. As scholars have noted, the history of the Mediterranean is often characterized as a history of conflict among neighbors who are acutely aware of their strong ethnic, economic, and religious differences; however, it is equally, and perhaps more significantly, a history of commercial, cultural, religious, and political coexistence. The climatic characteristics, geographical and geological structure of the Mediterranean have been important factors determining the architecture. Ethnic, cultural, religious and economic differences have led to the formation of different architectural solutions towards these factors. The ease of movement provided by the Mediterranean has caused intercultural communication to be very strong, making it possible to form similar elements between different architectures. Intercultural interaction, which is a formative factor besides climate and culture, accelerated considerably between the 14th and 17th centuries in the Mediterranean. Developments in maritime technology of the period are one of the most important factors in the emergence of this situation. These developments eventually took the Mediterranean beyond the interaction within itself to a point where it interacted with different continents. The Mediterranean climate and culture have caused semi-open spaces to become an important architectural element in this region. In addition to provide functional intermediate spaces in a variable climate, they have become an important element shaping Mediterranean architecture. In the Mediterranean architecture, which is very rich in semi-open spaces, gallery spaces have an important place among these spaces with the diversity they show. Among the gallery spaces in the Mediterranean, loggia/exterior sofa and revak/portico elements, which are used with different names and forms in many regions of the Mediterranean, are discussed in this thesis. These elements, which form a transition space and a threshold between interior and exterior, as well as private and public areas, are used in different sections and functions of structures. They can create an inward-facing area that ensures privacy where domestic work is performed or guests are hosted, or they can create an outward-facing area where the structure opens to the outside and establishes a relationship with the natural and human environment. The Mediterranean has historically exerted a geographically separative effect on the societies and civilizations within it, which possess different cultural, ethnic, political, and religious identities. However, alongside this separation, it has functioned as a vital tool facilitating communication. Previous studies in various social science disciplines have examined the subject of the Mediterranean possessing a common history and civilization structure. The primary aim of this study is to question whether traces of a common“Mediterranean life culture”can be detected through specific architectural elements. This inquiry seeks to provide a significant finding regarding whether it is possible to speak of common architectural elements that can be evaluated as“Mediterranean Architecture”at the point where a common Mediterranean culture is discussed. To facilitate this inquiry, gallery spaces, specifically the loggia/exterior sofa and revak/portico elements, have been selected as the subject of this thesis, as they are natural outcomes of the Mediterranean climate and geography. These areas were chosen both for their widespread use across all regions within the Mediterranean and for their presence in numerous well-preserved, high-quality examples. Furthermore, their effectiveness in defining space both formally and functionally played a crucial role in this selection. This comprehensive thesis study covers a cultural basin that interacts with one another along the Mediterranean coast, even though the regions may be located on different continents. Following the classification in the“Atlas of Vernacular Architecture of the World,”the Mediterranean and Southeast Asian geography is divided culturally into nine regions reflecting cultural zones shaped as a result of physical and social effects. Determined by climate, topography, population, economy, language, and belief, these regions for the Mediterranean are classified as:“Arabian Peninsula,”“Anatolia and Caucasus,”“Balkans,”“Eastern Mediterranean and Levant,”“Iberian Peninsula,”“Island Mediterranean,”“Italian Peninsula,”“Mesopotamia and Plateau,”and“North Africa and Maghreb.”Based on this study, the thesis evaluates the Mediterranean as seven cultural regions, while the regions named“Arabian Peninsula”and“Mesopotamia and Plateau”are considered as areas of influence. Nine palace structures selected from the other seven regions are examined within the scope of the thesis. Among these regions, North Africa and Maghreb are examined with two examples, Marrakech and Cairo, to better analyze the region. In Italy, gallery spaces are handled with structures in two cities, Venice and Pienza, to better examine the relationship established with the coastal and rural regions. The focus is on the use of gallery spaces named loggia, exterior sofa, portico, and revak in palace structures located in these seven regions that interact through the Mediterranean despite being in different geographies. In this sense, to make as comprehensive an assessment as possible, palace structures from different functions (defense-administrative-private), different cultures, different scales, and different regions, both coastal and rural settlements, are discussed to examine the extent to which gallery spaces are used widely and diversely. To detect similarities and differences as accurately as possible, structures were selected from the seven cultural regions handled according to the sufficiency of sources available about them and their state of authenticity. The diversity of gallery spaces possessed by the structures, their connection with public and private areas, and their formation according to climate and culture were effective in the selection of the structures. Due to the research area spreading over a wide geography, examples that could best reflect all structures were attempted to be selected. In the conducted thesis study, the selected architectural elements attempted to make inferences regarding Mediterranean architecture by evaluating the approaches of both social sciences and natural sciences together. The very limited number of studies in the literature regarding the handling of all regions of the Mediterranean together shaped this study on Mediterranean architecture. It is aimed to contribute with this thesis study to the few studies seen in analyzing Mediterranean architecture elements. At a point where Mediterranean historiography reshaped 20th-century historiography with the approach of the Annales School, primarily Fernand Braudel, studies on Mediterranean architecture carry great importance. The thesis study is an attempt to interpret the approach regarding Mediterranean history put forward by Fernand Braudel in terms of Mediterranean architectural elements. By conducting quantitative studies on environmental data related to structures alongside the theoretical ground of the thesis study, a study containing different approaches was targeted. Many words have been said about the Mediterranean throughout history, and the structure of the Mediterranean has been the subject of studies. In the second chapter, the chapters that form the infrastructure of the thesis on the Mediterranean are given. Firstly, points regarding the geographical characteristics of the Mediterranean, which play a determining role architecturally, are outlined. Subsequently, significant developments regarding the Mediterranean during the 14th and 17th centuries, which constitute the historical scope of the thesis, are addressed. Notes on the environment in which the discussed interaction occurred are specified in this section. Furthermore, how the Mediterranean has been approached and defined by researchers is emphasized. One of the sub-headings of this section explores how semi-open spaces are shaped in terms of climate and culture. At the same time, how these semi-open spaces diversified in the Mediterranean and how they were named in different regions is also mentioned. As one of the fundamental elements of Mediterranean Architecture, the relationship established by the courtyard element with semi-open spaces is also discussed under this section. The third chapter focuses on the gallery spaces within Mediterranean architecture: the loggia/exterior sofa and revak/ portico. Alongside conceptual explanations, the transmission of these spaces throughout the historical process is emphasized. The fundamental cultures that constitute the architectural infrastructure in the Mediterranean are analyzed, with a focus on how the specified gallery spaces were transmitted between these cultures to ensure continuity in the Mediterranean. In this sense, elements representing Mediterranean architecture among different gallery spaces in historical periods are addressed. In the fourth chapter, the Mediterranean region is evaluated as seven cultural regions, and nine palace structures constituting the most qualified examples of residential culture located in these regions are examined. Similarities and differences among the gallery elements formed by the influence of climate and culture in palaces across different regions are revealed. In the evaluation section of the study, it is determined that the loggia, exterior sofa, revak, and portico elements, which form a transition space and a threshold between interior and exterior, private and public areas, are used in different sections and functions of the structures. These elements can create an inward-facing area that ensures privacy where domestic work is performed or guests are hosted, as well as an outward-facing area where the structure opens to the outside and establishes a relationship with the natural and human environment. When intended to be introverted and provide privacy, gallery spaces establish a relationship with the courtyard; conversely, when extroverted, they serve as spaces connected to public and semipublic areas that relate to the natural and human environment, thus being usable for both purposes. It has been observed that gallery spaces diversify according to the relationship established with public or private areas. It is observed that structures possess rich gallery spaces regardless of whether they house defensive, administrative, or private functions. In addition, it is concluded that gallery spaces have diversified uses across different cultures. Semi-open spaces, which gained prevalence as a result of interactions between societies, have been able to diversify according to different approaches of societies, such as their perception of administration and privacy. At the same time, alongside this diversity, it is seen that the communication established by societies through the unifying effect of the Mediterranean has impoverished similar cultural and symbolic meanings, and gallery spaces can be shaped around these common values. Based on quantitative data, it is demonstrated that the designs and layouts of gallery spaces are in a strong relationship with climatic and geographical characteristics alongside cultural values. Furthermore, conceptual studies on Mediterranean history have been examined within the context of architecture. In this sense, inferences have been made by examining quantitative and conceptual studies together.
