PID controllers are among the most widely used controllers in industrial systems due to their simple structure, reliability, and wide variety of applications. The PID controller parameter selection depends directly on the dynamic characteristics of the system to be controlled, operating conditions, and desired performance. Parameter tuning has been a longstanding and widely studied problem in academia and industry. Classical tuning methods such as Ziegler–Nichols, Cohen–Coon tend to provide satisfactory results under certain assumptions or for systems with limited dynamic behaviors. However, these methods become insufficient when the desired specifications vary or when nonlinear dynamics are present. Over the past decade, intelligent and data-driven automatic PID parameter tuning has become an important research direction in control engineering, aiming to overcome the limitations of classical rule-based methods. In this thesis, a method for artificial intelligence-assisted PID controller tuning has been formulated based on target time-domain performance specifications such as settling time, maximum overshoot, and steady-state error. The proposed method determines PID parameters that produce the desired closed-loop response using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). To train the network, a large dataset was generated using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). For each set of performance specifications, the GA optimized a fitness function that simultaneously minimized the differences between the actual and desired performance measures. In this manner, it was ensured that the resulting PID parameters produced the desired response characteristics. The resulting dataset, consisting of multiple combinations of performance specifications and the best controller parameters, was balanced using the Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) approach to reduce clustering in dense regions and improve the representativeness of samples across the parameter space. In the training phase, different ANN architectures with distinct depths and numbers of neurons were tested for both systems, and the architectures that achieved the smallest prediction errors were selected as the final models. All networks were trained using the Adam optimization algorithm, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) was used as the loss function. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and testing subsets, and the convergence of the loss function indicated stable learning behavior. In both systems, the trained ANN models performed well in predicting the PID parameters accurately, as confirmed by regression analyses between the actual and predicted values. The described tuning technique was experimentally validated on two distinct real-time systems developed within the scope of this thesis. The first system is a DC motor speed control system, representing a linear dynamic behavior, and was used to validate the fundamental performance of the proposed method. The second system is a ball height control setup based on an airflow mechanism. Both systems were modeled, simulated, and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, and the obtained PID parameters were applied via a real-time control platform. The experimental work was carried out to evaluate reference tracking and disturbance rejection performances for various target performance specifications. In the experiments for DC motor speed control, responses with ANN-assisted PID parameters were very close to the desired overshoot and settling time values with nearly zero steady-state error. For instance, in one experiment, when the settling time was selected to be 0.20 seconds and the target overshoot was zero, the system settled at 0.18 seconds with zero overshoot and no steady-state error, matching the design specifications. These were also compared against parameters obtained using other tuning methods (Ziegler–Nichols, Cohen–Coon, Internal Model Control). For the same performance, it was observed that the controller parameters obtained using ANN were comparable to those obtained using other methods. Disturbance rejection tests showed that the ANN-tuned controller returned the motor speed to the reference value in approximately 0.2 seconds, maintaining robustness against load disturbances. The results show that the proposed method achieves stable control performance under various working conditions. For the air levitated ball height control system, the proposed tuning method successfully learned the behavior of the system. The experiments verified that the ANN-tuned PID controller achieved the target settling times and levels of overshoot for different target heights. While classical PID tuning methods can produce unstable or oscillatory behavior from the nonlinear aerodynamic effects. The new method showed stable and precise control of levitated ball position. When subjected to disturbance conditions such as a rapid reduction in airflow, the controller was able to efficiently reject disturbances and restore the ball to its desired height. The rapid recovery and robustness demonstrated by these results confirm the effectiveness of the AI-assisted tuning system described in this thesis for handling systems with time-varying dynamics. For both test systems, correlation analyses between performance measures and controller gains revealed notable trends. Increasing Kp generally reduced the settling time and steady-state error, but increased the maximum overshoot; increasing Ki improved steady-state accuracy, but at the cost of longer settling times. These trends agree with classical control theory and demonstrate that the neural network learned not only mathematical relationships but also the control dynamics of the system through training. The consistency between the AI-predicted and traditionally obtained parameters also confirms the physical interpretability and reliability of the proposed model. All experimental results confirmed that the developed ANN-assisted PID tuning method achieves generalization performance for different systems and performance targets. Additionally, this method can directly generate controller parameters from desired performance specifications without iterative manual tuning. This feature has significant advantages in real industrial applications where model uncertainties and time-varying dynamics dominate. In general, this thesis offers a performance-based, AI-assisted solution to the PID tuning problem. By combining the global search capability of Genetic Algorithms with the nonlinear mapping ability of ANN, a flexible and automated controller design framework has been established. The proposed method was successfully tested under both linear and nonlinear experimental setups, proving its efficiency and flexibility. ANN-tuned PID controllers yielded stable, accurate, and fast responses that closely tracked the specified time-domain performance criteria. The results indicate that the new method not only gives classical tuning performance where it exists but also improves it to new multiobjective problems that cannot be solved optimally by conventional means. The findings of this study are expected to form a foundation for future research on intelligent and adaptive control systems for online tuning of controller parameters according to real-time performance feedback. Future studies can broaden this strategy using reinforcement learning or neural–predictive hybrid control architectures to enable fully automatic controller adaptation in dynamic operating conditions.
