This dissertation examines the characteristic techniques of tanbur performance within the context of Turkish makam music and aims to develop an idiomatic notation system capable of representing these techniques more accurately and consistently than conventional notation practices. Although Turkish makam music has historically relied on both written and oral transmission systems, the meşk (oral) tradition has shaped performance practices far more deeply than notation. Consequently, the standard staff notation adopted in the nineteenth century reflects makam-based performance (which is shaped by individualized interpretative choices) only to a limited extent. In this regard, the study focuses on Tanbûrî Cemil Bey's Şedaraban Saz Semaisi, one of the foundational works of the tanbur repertoire, and analyzes six different solo interpretations of the piece, including the composer's own recording. Through comparative transcription and performance analysis, idiomatic techniques commonly found in traditional practice have been identified, and notation strategies employed in contemporary works written for tanbur have been evaluated. The central aim is to propose a notation model that can bridge the gap between the widely used“bare notation”(yalın notasyon) and the improvisatory performance reality. The primary objective of the study is to reveal performance techniques specific to the tanbur -including various forms of çarpma, legato applications, vibrato types, portamento/glissando, dem (pedal) usage, tarama, flageolet, and other characteristic techniques- based on traditional and contemporary performance examples, and to offer an idiomatic notation proposal capable of representing these techniques reliably and systematically. A secondary aim is to display the limitations of“bare notation”in the face of performance complexity and to develop a clearer and more applicable written language that aligns with the needs of contemporary composition while remaining consistent with established stylistic norms of tanbur performance. Accordingly, the study integrates two complementary analytical layers: performance-based analyses derived from the transcriptions of Tanbûrî Cemil Bey and five other performers, and analytical examinations of notational practices in contemporary works featuring the tanbur. Together, these layers support the development of a functional writing system for performers, composers, and educators. The research is guided by the following central question: how can the characteristic technical elements of tanbur performance be identified through performance transcriptions and contemporary musical applications, and how can these findings contribute to the development of an idiomatic notation model for the instrument? Supporting sub-questions explore which idiomatic techniques consistently appear in traditional and contemporary performances; how these techniques can be represented through clear, practical, and applicable notation symbols; how the disparity between the written“bare notation”and the performed version can be reduced; and in what ways the proposed system can strengthen communication between composers and performers. The study employs an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design. In the first phase, qualitative data were produced through detailed transcriptions of six different performances of Şedaraban Saz Semaisi. These transcriptions were coded, categorized, and compared using descriptive analysis and thematic coding. In the second phase, quantitative elements-such as the frequency of specific techniques-were used to support the qualitative findings. Contemporary compositions featuring the tanbur were analyzed comparatively to identify existing idiomatic notation approaches. The methodological framework includes sampling six performers, transcribing audio recordings, applying descriptive and thematic analyses, and conducting comparative evaluations. The study acknowledges certain limitations, such as focusing on a single work and classifying techniques only on the basis of available recordings. Comparative analyses demonstrate that, even when the melodic line remains constant, there is significant interpretive variation among the performers. Ornamentation practices include various forms of mızraplı and mızrapsız çarpma, double ornaments, and vurkaç; legato applications vary widely; and vibrato appears in both parmak titretme and sap titretme forms. Portamento and glissando techniques fulfill different contextual functions such as note-to-note, ornament-to-note, or note-to-ornament transitions. Dem usage varies considerably among performers and at times functions as a supporting pedal. Articulatory and coloristic techniques such as tarama and flageolet are also identified. The execution of long note values and descending adjacent-note motifs changes according to individual performer preference. These findings clearly highlight the discrepancy between the written version of the piece and its performed realizations. Within this framework, the study also introduces the concept of“bare notation”(yalın notasyon) as a descriptive term proposed within the scope of this dissertation to define the prevailing notational practice in Turkish makam music. This practice, which prioritizes the core melodic outline while leaving articulation, ornamentation, and instrument-specific techniques largely unspecified, functions primarily as a mnemonic and interpretative guide rather than a prescriptive performance text. By situating this approach in relation to comparable practices such as lead sheet notation in jazz and diminution-based performance traditions in early European music, the study emphasizes that the discrepancy between notation and performance is not incidental but structurally embedded in the musical culture. This perspective provides a conceptual foundation for the proposed idiomatic notation model, which does not aim to standardize interpretation, but rather to expand the expressive and communicative capacity of written music in a manner that remains sensitive to performer agency and stylistic plurality. The study also examines contemporary works by Ayhan Gunca, Sadık Uğraş Durmuş, Gizem Alever, Oğuzhan Balcı, Eray Altınbüken, Orkun Zafer Özgelen and Tayfun Demirbaş, evaluating the notation strategies used to write tanbur techniques. Although these works incorporate numerous idiomatic elements, they lack a unified standard of notation. This comparative layer underscores the need for a comprehensive notation approach that reflects both historical performance practices and contemporary compositional requirements. Based on the analyzed data, the dissertation proposes a comprehensive notation system for the tanbur. The proposed system includes dynamic and expressive markings; various staccato and legato types; accentuation symbols; arpeggio/tarama indications; multiple tremolo models; trill, mordent, and grupetto forms; puandorg; a detailed classification of çarpma types; categories of portamento; natural and artificial harmonics; vibrato types; and indications for dem usage. Each symbol is accompanied by performance explanations and contextual guidelines, and the system is supplemented by a quick-reference chart for practical use. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the technical diversity of tanbur performance can be systematically classified and represented through a specialized idiomatic notation model. The proposed notation model does not seek to exhaustively codify all aspects of performance or to eliminate interpretative freedom. Rather, it delineates a structured notational space in which recurrent and stylistically significant techniques can be represented without constraining individual expression. By explicitly acknowledging the limits of notation, the model balances analytical clarity with performative openness, reinforcing the understanding of notation as a communicative framework rather than a prescriptive blueprint. The proposed model strengthens the relationship between notation and performance, enhances clarity in transcription, supports contemporary compositional practice, and offers pedagogical benefits for tanbur education, particularly in supporting the transmission of performance techniques that are traditionally conveyed through oral instruction. By integrating traditional performance practices with contemporary notational requirements, the study contributes to the sustainability and analytical understanding of tanbur performance in both scholarly and creative contexts. Finally, beyond its focus on the tanbur and Şedaraban Saz Semaisi, the methodological framework developed in this study offers a transferable model for the analysis and notation of idiomatic performance practices in other instruments and repertoires within Turkish makam music. The combined use of performance-based transcription, comparative analysis, and notational synthesis provides a flexible analytical pathway that may inform future studies concerned with the written representation of orally transmitted musical traditions. In this sense, the proposed notation model functions not only as a descriptive system, but also as an interface between oral tradition and written musical thought.
