Beyond being physical voids within the city, public open spaces are places where individuals make their presence visible through daily interventions and express themselves within a spatial context. Tracing practices, which have existed since prehistoric times, form an interface within the relationships individuals establish with the urban environment. Traces carrying various forms of communication efforts and the ways in which individuals come together in public spaces change and shape various meaning and perception processes in individuals. Constantly functioning and transforming surfaces in daily life, these spaces also form a dynamic reflection of the relationships that citizens establish with each other and their environment. Beyond physical coexistence, when considered alongside their communicative and interactive potential, public spaces become carriers of collective memory and identity. To comprehend the multi-layered structure of cities in their continuity and transformation, cities must be approached not only physically and formally but also temporally, socially, and semantically. The meaning of urban spaces is derived from the identity of the individual who produces meaning, personal interactions, and the relationships of individuals with the space. These social interactions are shaped and urban communication is produced primarily in public spaces. Everything seen and heard in public spaces enables the production of publicness through the actions and discourses of individuals. With their temporal, spatial and social layers readable together, public spaces are, in this respect, a concrete expression of the palimpsest. Examining the interactions between individuals and public spaces in the context of spatial belonging enables analyses of the physical, social and psychological components of cities. At the same time, within the interactions between individuals and urban spaces, shaped by collective memory and shared experiences, the sense of place attachment to public spaces intersects individual bonds with socially shared meanings. While perceiving and experiencing urban spaces, individuals also interpret, transform, and reinforce them with their own identities. The person-environment fit theory provides a comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding this interaction between the individual and the urban environment and for reading the dynamics behind spatial meaning production. Within the context of this theory, individuals' behaviours are explained through the person, the environment, and the fit between the person and the environment. Within this framework, environmental factors are considered not only as a basis for guiding individuals' behaviour, but also as a support layer that meets their needs and shapes their relationships of attachment. In everyday life, public spaces that enable individuals to express themselves in a spatial context serve as a bridge between the urban environment and social existence. Everyday, non-destructive, individual interventions in public spaces are considered tracing practices in this study. The fundamental characteristic that distinguishes tracing practices from vandalism is that leaving traces allows individuals to personalise the space, gain visibility in the public realm, and reproduce the public space through physical interventions. The potential for action offered by the environment to individuals is defined by the concept of affordance. Within this framework, the affordances offered by the environment shape the individual's actions, and the individual's actions shape the ways in which the environment is utilized. Tracing practices are interventions that emerge through the affordances offered by the environment and can be interpreted as a behavioural form of personalisation in the public sphere. These interventions transform not only the individual's relationship with the space but also the ways in which the space is perceived and interpreted by other users through the resulting layer of traces. As a result of tracing practices, the traces formed create a new layer in the urban environment. For individuals, these traces sometimes serve as a sign of attachment to a place, while at other times they acquire new meanings by becoming embedded in the collective memory. The main objective of the thesis is to present a measurable analytical framework and test it in the field, in order to objectively compare the meanings that people attribute to the urban space through traces and the resulting behaviours, in light of the research questions. The effects of traces, which emerge as micro-scale interventions in urban space, on place attachment, urban memory, and perception are examined, and the semantic position of traces in the urban environment is discussed within the scope of the study. In this context, a conceptual grounding based on a set of parameters has been developed within the framework of discussions in the literature on the concepts of affordances, personalisation practices, place attachment, and person-environment fit theory. The selection of the study area is driven by the presence of three key characteristics: firstly, the existence of an observable practice of leaving traces; secondly, the presence of permeable public spaces that are open to individual interventions; and thirdly, a social structure that accommodates a diverse range of user profiles. Bozkurt Neighbourhood, with its multi-layered historical and cultural structure, strong neighbourhood relationships, and high pedestrian traffic, provides a suitable urban context for testing the developed parameter set. The fact that the segregation produced by physical thresholds and functional differentiation greatly overlaps with the neighbourhood's administrative boundaries indicates that these boundaries function not only as administrative thresholds but also as perceptual and social thresholds. Accordingly, considering that the administrative boundaries are supported by physical and functional thresholds, the administrative boundaries of Bozkurt Neighbourhood have been accepted as the study area limits. Based on the analyses conducted on the traces found in the Kurtuluş District - Bozkurt Neighbourhood, a total of 671 traces were identified and classified into four types. The route with the highest density and variety of traces was identified, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants along this route. The qualitative data obtained from the interviews were analysed within the framework of a parameter set developed using thematic analysis and converted into quantitative data through a theme-code system. Correlation and distribution analyses performed on the obtained quantitative data enabled the analysis of relationships between themes and codes. Within the scope of the study, the findings were evaluated in four groups: spatial, perceptual, semantic, and behavioural. In this context, traces do not produce meaning unless they are supported by aesthetic, semantic and normative evaluations. Perceptual awareness is not an automatic precursor to urban meanings; therefore, perception operates as an independent variable. There is a faint and limited relationship between perception and behaviour. Perception does not determine the direction and intensity of behaviour; however, it triggers the establishment of the relationship. Therefore, perception alone is not sufficient to explain behaviour. Behaviour is more strongly linked to meaning than to perception. A chain of personal meanings, legitimacy, continuity and a tendency towards protection can be observed. In the transformation of meaning into behaviour, the appropriation of space is a decisive and triggering threshold behaviour. As a result of the analysis processes and evaluation of the findings, three main conclusions were reached within the scope of this study: • Individual traces in public spaces do not directly produce a place attachment, but when considered alongside personal memory and individual experiences, they play an indirect role specific to the urban context, deepening the relationship established with the urban environment. • Tracing practices do not transform the perception of public space in a singular sense. Traces in urban space trigger multi-layered perceptual processes in line with individuals' normative assessments, personally produced meanings, and experiential backgrounds. • The spatial distribution, visibility, and physical characteristics of traces do not affect the functional and symbolic layers of public spaces in the identical way. Traces that are collectively interpreted provide spatial references for the reproduction of urban memory by becoming nodes for individuals. The intense and heterogeneous socio-cultural structure of Kurtuluş District - Bozkurt Neighbourhood, which has developed alongside its historical processes, allows the traces to be perceived as the ordinary and acceptable components of the urban space. The intersection of mobility patterns and everyday uses within the study area, along with the nodes that serve as the support of spatial memory, form micro-focal points in Bozkurt Neighbourhood. Although traces in Bozkurt Neighbourhood are regarded by users as one of the definitional elements of the space, this does not indicate that spatial belonging is established directly through traces, but rather that traces are part of the complex structure of attachment. By bringing together previously fragmented aspects of the literature, this study proposes a conceptual framework for understanding the role of traces—micro-scale elements within the city—in shaping place attachment. The developed parameter set comprehensively addresses concepts within the framework of the person-environment fit theory, explaining how individual practices become visible in the urban space and how this visibility is reflected back to individuals. In this context, the study goes beyond conceptualisation and provides a theoretical basis for interdisciplinary research in the fields of urban design, environmental psychology, and urban planning. In this respect, conceptualising individual traces in the context of public space contributes not only to the literature on spatial belonging but also to larger-scale discussions on the production, appropriation, and management of public space.
