Concerns about environmental pollution and operating cost have increased interest in the use of renewable energy generation systems across vehicle applications. In particular, new requirements in marine applications force designers to develop systems that use alternative energy resources and renewable technologies that not only limit emissions but also improve overall energy efficiency. This trend has made these systems increasingly complex. At the same time, some emerging applications are still questioned in terms of practical feasibility due to the increase in operational costs associated with new technologies. Interest in renewable energy systems has continued for several decades. In maritime applications, the number of studies on renewable energy integration has increased markedly over the last decade. A review of the literature suggests that marine vehicles will increasingly be powered by renewable energy systems with zero emissions. There are many application examples of sailboats using wind and solar energy as energy sources. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have become a preferred option for supporting battery charging and meeting onboard electrical demands. Small vessels have increasingly adopted wind turbines. Water turbine applications have also received growing attention, particularly for sailboat operations. In this study, renewable energy units were considered to meet all electrical energy demands of an existing sailboat through the design of energy-generating elements. The aim was to convert an existing sailboat into a zero-emission vehicle by removing the diesel engine and introducing renewable energy systems. An existing sailboat was selected as the design platform to research and develop the required technological additions and modifications. Using an existing boat was particularly important, not only for propulsion system development but also for scenario analyses based on the vessel's available test data. Moody 41 DS was selected as the reference sailboat For which vehicle particulars and performance characteristics were collected. Using these data, the proposed propulsion system and energy-generating units were investigated. Zero-emission operation introduces technical requirements for generating and storing energy during navigation and when the vessel is docked, such that the boat can operate using stored and harvested energy without emissions. Renewable energy resources were evaluated based on both the vessel's operational status and meteorological conditions. The operational status describes whether the boat is stationary or non-stationary, for example, docked at port, maneuvering under auxiliary propulsion, navigating under sail, or at anchor. These conditions define how energy is generated, stored, and consumed. For instance, when the boat is sailing, available energy resources include wind, solar power and the water flow beneath the hull. Navigation scenarios were defined using historical meteorological data for the Marmara Sea region of Turkey. Four types of electrical energy-generating elements were introduced into the existing sailboat, which originally relied on an internal combustion engine and associated carbon and other hazardous gas emissions. The energy-generating elements included solar PV sets, wind turbines and water turbines that generate electricity during navigation. For energy generation, two classes of elements were defined. The first class consisted of the solar PV and wind energy systems, which can generate energy even when the boat is docked. The second class was defined as dynamic energy generation systems and consisted of two water turbines that generate energy from the water flow beneath the hull during navigation. Both classes were considered in the design, and test data were used in the analysis of energy demand and utilization. For propulsion, the design proposal employed a DC motor–propeller set. A systems engineering approach was used to derive requirements from the existing sailboat's resistance and power characteristics, ensuring that user propulsion demands could be met during non-sailing operations. The propulsion system was selected so that it can also operate in energy recovery mode when the boat is sailing, with the propeller functioning as a water turbine. As a result, the fourth electrical energy-generating element in the overall concept is the propeller operating as a hydrogenerator during sailing. The water turbine and propulsion work leveraged established performance-estimation practices and computational methods, and the resulting outcomes were used to develop the operational scenarios and the associated datasets. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) workflow was implemented in line with commonly adopted approaches in the field. The overall system proposed in this study includes four energy-generating elements, a new propulsion system, an energy management system, and battery groups, which together form a multi-domain and therefore relatively complex architecture. To manage this complexity, systems engineering was applied as an integrating framework that coordinates technical and managerial activities across the project scope. This approach supports consistent requirement definition, interface management, and verification planning throughout the product life cycle, and it is widely used across engineering sectors for the development of complex systems. To clearly present both an overview and the detailed structure of the product development process, including end-to-end design traceability, the Transdisciplinary Product Development Lifecycle (TPDL) model was adopted. The model builds on standard systems engineering principles and formalizes traceability requirements that link needs, requirements, design decisions, and validation activities. Product development lifecycle models have been proposed and refined over several decades, and within this context the TPDL model extends axiomatic-design-based thinking toward lifecycle definition and support of a test-oriented development environment. In this study, the approach was used to establish the requirements matrix, including functional design constraints. Design considerations and specifications were developed such that the boat could maintain navigation and all electrical consumers could be supplied without interruption, thereby verifying a zero-emission sailboat concept through operational (navigation) scenarios. Three operational system-in-use scenarios were demonstrated in the results. These scenarios included operational status and power demands of propulsion units, sails and electrical consumers, using historical meteorological data for randomly selected dates and times. The scenario sequence included the boat being docked and charging batteries, maneuvering with the propulsion units powered by batteries according to user-requested ship speed and navigating under sails based on wind direction and wind speed to achieve the resulting ship speed. While the ship navigated at the calculated speeds, the energy-generating elements simultaneously generated energy. Based on the analysis results and design selection criteria, the design selections were reconsidered for optimization of energy demand and utilization. The design was demonstrated through three operational scenarios of the sailboat: docked at port, maneuvering, navigation and anchorage conditions within those scenarios. Scenarios were executed using meteorological conditions in the Marmara Sea, which is statistically considered a region with lower solar and/or wind energy potential compared to other coastal regions of Turkey. This selection was intentional in order to evaluate performance under relatively low renewable energy potential conditions. The first scenario lasted 23 hours between Tuzla and Büyükada. The battery groups were 50% charged at the start and the scenario ended at 28%. The second scenario lasted 22 hours between Tuzla and Mudanya. The battery groups were 60% charged at the start and the scenario ended at 44%. These first two scenarios represented typical sailboat operations. The third scenario simulated an emergency condition. The boat was assumed to be at Büyükada and navigation was performed using the DC motor powered by the batteries to reach Tuzla, with wind speed assumed to be zero. This scenario lasted 1 hour and 26 minutes, and battery state of charge decreased from 100% to 65%. These results demonstrated that the sailboat could navigate for approximately four hours solely on battery power under the assumed emergency conditions. In summary, the proposed renewable-electric conversion concept demonstrated that an existing sailing yacht can be operated under a zero-emission framework by combining multiple onboard generation mechanisms with battery-based energy management. Across the three representative operational scenarios, the modeled energy balance showed that typical sail-assisted routes in the Marmara Sea can be completed while maintaining sufficient battery state of charge, despite the region's relatively low renewable energy potential. The emergency scenario further indicated that short-duration, fully electric propulsion is feasible without wind input, enabling approximately four hours of low-speed endurance on battery power alone under the stated assumptions. Overall, the results confirm the technical viability of the integrated architecture and highlight that careful component sizing, operational strategy, and energy management are the key determinants of continuous, practical, zero-emission sailboat operation.
