Özet
Tekstil ve mimarlık etkileşimi insanlık tarihinin en eski dönemlerinden beri varlığını sürdürür. Tıpkı insan bedenini çevreleyen giysiler gibi, henüz yerleşik hayata geçmeyen toplulukların ikincil giysisi, beden duvarları tekstilden oluşan dokuma çadırlardır. Arkitekstiller, mimarlık ve tekstil arakesitindeki düşünme ve yapma yollarını tarifler. Tez çalışmasının amacı, arkitekstillerin mimari dil ve tektonik aracılığıyla anlam üretmedeki rolünü ve arkitektonik dili nasıl dönüştürdüğünü ortaya koymaktır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmada doğrudan malzemeye referans veren daha dar anlamlı tekstil terimi yerine, tekstillerin mimari dile ve tektoniğe çeşitli şekillerde dahil edilişini tanımlayan arkitekstil terimi kullanılmıştır. Arkitekstiller, tekstiller aracılığıyla mimarlıkta teoriler geliştirilmesini, inşa süreçlerinde ve yapıda tekstilin malzeme ve metafor olarak kullanımını ve tekstil ürünleri ve tekniklerinden doğan terimlerin mimari tasarım ve üretim süreçlerinde yer almasını kapsar. Dolayısıyla mimarlıkta dil ve anlam tartışmalarına konu edildiklerinde, dilsel ve tektonik olmak üzere iki temel katmanda ele alınabileceği görülmüştür. Tez çalışmasında literatür araştırması yöntemi kullanılarak mimarlıkta dil ve anlam konusu ve arkitekstillerin dili ve anlamı kurmadaki rolüne dair çalışmanın kuramsal iskeleti oluşturulmuş; devamında örnek incelemesi yöntemiyle arkitekstillerin arkitektonik dil oluşumundaki rolüne dair okuma derinleştirilmiştir.“Mimarlıkta Dil ve Anlam”bölümünde mimarlık tarihinin çeşitli dönemlerinde dile ve anlama dair yaklaşımlar ele alınmış; özellikle modern ve postmodern dönemde yoğunlaşan dil ve anlam tartışmaları incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın devamında arkitekstillerin mimari dili ve anlamı ne şekilde dönüştürdüğü“Dilsel Katman”ve“Tektonik Katman”üzerinden okunmuştur.“Dilsel Katman”tekstillerin analojiler ve metaforlar yoluyla mimarlığın terminolojik diline, tasarım ve üretim süreçlerine sızarak dili ve anlamı kurmak üzere araçsallaşmasını konu etmektedir.“Tektonik Katman”ile tekstil malzeme ve teknikleri üzerinden, tekstilin materyal niteliklerinin arkitektonik dili dönüştürmesi, biçimsel ve sembolik unsurlarla dil ve anlam üretimine nasıl aracılık ettiği ele alınmıştır. Kuramla ortaya konan ilişkileri somutlaştırmak ve derinleştirmek için arkitekstillerin yer bulduğu araştırma projesi ve yapılar üzerinden örnek incelemesi yapılmıştır. İncelenecek örneklerin seçiminde, literatürde yer alan iki temel kırılma noktası belirleyici olmuştur. Bunlardan ilki 1988 yılı sonrasına işaret eden geç postmodern mekan teorilerinde mekan düşüncesinin değişim göstermesi sonucu, özgün nitelikleriyle tekstillerin yeni mekan paradigmasının ifadesi ve uygulaması için uygun malzemeler olması ve bununla birlikte arkitekstillerin mimarlık alanında kendine daha çok yer bulmasıdır. İkinci bir kırılma noktası ise bilgisayar teknolojileri ile dijital tasarım ve üretim alanındaki gelişmelerle birlikte 1990'lı yıllardan itibaren tekstile özgü niteliklerin NURBS (Düzgün olmayan rasyonel temelli eğri) yüzeyler ve sanal ağlar aracılığıyla mimarlık alanında daha belirgin bir şekilde kullanılır olmasıdır. Literatürde işaret edilen bu iki kırılma noktası referans alınarak seçilen örnekler üzerinden bir okuma yapılmış, mimari dil ve anlam ilişkisi“Dilsel Katman”ve“Tektonik Katman”bölümlerinde ele alınan unsurlar üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir.

The interaction between textiles and architecture has existed since the earliest periods of human history. Much like garments that envelop the human body, the secondary clothing of pre-settled communities consisted of woven tents whose enclosing walls were made of textiles. Architextiles describe ways of thinking and making that emerge at the intersection of architecture and textiles. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the role of architextiles in the production of meaning through architectural language and tectonics, and to examine how they transform architectural discourse. Accordingly, rather than employing the narrower term textiles, which directly refers to materiality, this study adopts the term architextiles to define the diverse ways in which textiles are incorporated into architectural language and tectonic expression. Architextiles encompass the development of architectural theories through textiles, the use of textiles as both material and metaphor in construction processes and the built environment, and the integration of concepts derived from textile products and techniques into architectural design and production processes. Consequently, when addressed within discussions of language and meaning in architecture, architextiles can be examined across two fundamental layers: the linguistic and the tectonic. In this thesis, a literature review method was employed to construct the theoretical framework concerning the issues of language and meaning in architecture and the role of architextiles in the formation of language and meaning. Subsequently, the reading of the role of architextiles in the formation of architectural language was deepened through a case study methodology. In the chapter titled“Language and Meaning in Architecture,”approaches to language and meaning across various periods of architectural history are examined, with particular emphasis on the debates that intensified during the modern and postmodern eras. In the subsequent sections of the study, the ways in which architextiles transform architectural language and meaning are analyzed through two dimensions: the Linguistic Layer and the Tectonic Layer. The Linguistic Layer addresses the instrumentalization of textiles in the construction of language and meaning, as they permeate the terminological vocabulary of architecture as well as design and production processes through analogies and metaphors. The Tectonic Layer examines how the material qualities of textiles—through textile materials and techniques—transform architectural language, and how they mediate the production of language and meaning through formal and symbolic elements. In order to substantiate and further develop the relationships articulated through theory, a series of case studies was conducted on research projects and buildings in which architextiles are employed. In the selection of the cases to be examined, two major points of rupture identified in the literature were determinative. The first corresponds to the period after 1988, when shifts in spatial thinking within late postmodern theories of space rendered textiles—by virtue of their distinctive qualities—particularly suitable materials for the expression and implementation of a new spatial paradigm, leading to the increased presence of architextiles within architectural discourse. The second point of rupture emerges with the advancement of computer technologies and developments in digital design and fabrication, through which, from the 1990s onward, textile-specific qualities began to be more explicitly incorporated into architecture via NURBS surfaces and virtual networks. Based on these two points of rupture identified in the literature, an analytical reading was carried out through the selected cases, and the relationship between architectural language and meaning was evaluated and grounded with reference to the components discussed within the Linguistic Layer and the Tectonic Layer.
