Çalışma kapsamında CEM I, CEM II ve CEM IV tiplerine ait toplam on iki adet çimento örneği analiz edilmiştir.
This study aims to determine the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides in different types of cement samples obtained from manufacturers operating in various regions of Türkiye, in order to assess their radiological characteristics and suitability for use as building materials. Cement is one of the most widely used construction materials worldwide, and due to its mineralogical composition and the raw materials involved in its production, it may contain varying levels of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). These radionuclides, which mainly originate from the uranium and thorium decay series as well as from potassium-bearing minerals, can contribute to both external gamma radiation exposure and internal exposure through radon exhalation when cement-based materials are used in residential buildings. Consequently, prolonged human exposure may occur, particularly in indoor environments where such materials are extensively utilized. Therefore, a systematic investigation of radionuclide activity concentrations in cement products is essential for evaluating potential radiological hazards, estimating radiation exposure to the population, and ensuring compliance with national and international radiation protection guidelines and safety standards. Within the scope of this study, a total of twelve cement samples belonging to the CEM I, CEM II, and CEM IV types were analyzed. These cement types represent the most commonly used materials in the construction sector, including ordinary Portland cement as well as blended cements incorporating supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, pozzolana, and other mineral additives. The selection of samples from manufacturers operating in different geographical regions of Türkiye was intended to provide a representative assessment of the radiological characteristics of cement products available on the national market. The activity concentrations of the naturally occurring radionuclides ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K were determined using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector, a technique widely recognized for its reliability and precision in environmental radioactivity measurements. Gamma spectrometric analyses were performed using a p-type coaxial HPGe detector system with a relative efficiency of 40% and an energy resolution of 1.8 keV at 1332 keV. The measurement system is installed at the Low Level Radioactivity Measurements Laboratory of the Energy Institute at Istanbul Technical University. The high energy resolution of the detector allows for the effective separation of closely spaced gamma-ray peaks, which is particularly important for the precise identification and quantification of radionuclides belonging to the uranium and thorium decay series. Prior to the measurement of the cement samples, the energy calibration of the detector was performed using a certified ¹⁵²Eu point source covering a wide range of gamma xxiii ray energies. This calibration ensured an accurate relationship between channel number and gamma-ray energy across the entire energy spectrum relevant to the radionuclides investigated. The photopeak efficiency calibration of the detector was carried out using the certified IAEA-312 soil reference material, which has a well characterized radionuclide composition and a density comparable to that of the cement samples. This step is essential for converting measured gamma-ray count rates into activity concentrations. Furthermore, the accuracy and reliability of the applied measurement methodology were assessed using the certified IAEA-447 soil–moss reference material. The use of this reference material enabled verification of the overall performance of the gamma spectrometric system under conditions closely resembling those encountered during routine analysis of the cement samples. Cement samples were prepared at the Radioactive Tracers and Applications Laboratory of the Energy Institute at Istanbul Technical University, following standardized sample preparation procedures to ensure consistency and reproducibility of the measurements. For dry mass determination, the samples were dried in an oven at 105 °C for 12 hours to remove moisture content, in accordance with the relevant ASTM standard. The samples were accurately weighed and transferred into cylindrical plastic containers of fixed geometry, specifically selected to be compatible with the gamma-ray spectrometric measurement setup. To prevent radon gas leakage and the potential loss of radon progeny, the containers were tightly sealed using parafilm. In order to establish secular equilibrium between ²²⁶Ra and its short-lived decay products, which are used for indirect determination of ²²⁶Ra activity, the sealed samples were stored for a minimum period of 30 days prior to counting. This storage period is essential to allow radon and its progeny to reach equilibrium, thereby ensuring accurate and reliable activity concentration calculations. In the determination of activity concentrations, particularly for radionuclides emitting low-energy gamma rays, the self-attenuation effect represents a significant source of systematic uncertainty. Self-attenuation occurs when gamma rays emitted within the sample are partially attenuated before reaching the detector, which can lead to an underestimation of the true activity concentration if not adequately corrected. To address this effect, self-attenuation correction factors for the cement samples were determined using both experimental and theoretical approaches. The application of two independent methods enabled cross-validation of the correction factors and increased confidence in the accuracy of the final results. In the experimental approach, the gamma-ray transmission technique was employed over an energy range from 53.2 keV to 1408.0 keV using certified point sources of ²⁴¹Am, ¹³³Ba, ⁵⁷Co, ¹³⁷Cs, ¹⁵²Eu, and ⁵⁴Mn. These sources were selected to cover a broad spectrum of gamma-ray energies relevant to the radionuclides investigated. Transmission measurements were performed by recording gamma-ray intensities with and without the cement samples positioned between the source and the detector. From these measurements, energy dependent transmission coefficients were obtained, and the corresponding self attenuation correction factors were derived. In the theoretical approach, mass attenuation coefficients corresponding to the relevant gamma-ray energies were calculated using the EPIXS database. These coefficients, together with experimentally determined sample density and thickness parameters, were used to calculate self absorption correction factors based on the Beer–Lambert law. Accurate theoretical calculations required detailed chemical compositions of the cement samples as input data for the EPIXS database. The chemical compositions were determined using wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectrometry at the Central xxiv Laboratory of Fundamental and Engineering Sciences Application and Research Center of Gazi University. A comparison between the experimentally and theoretically derived self-attenaution correction factors showed good agreement, with discrepancies of less than 10% across the investigated energy range. The self-attenuation correction factors were found to vary from 1.02 at 1408.0 keV to 1.51 at 53.2 keV, indicating that self-attenuation effects become increasingly significant at lower gamma-ray energies. The results clearly demonstrate that self-absorption is dominant in the low-energy region below 200 keV, reaching its maximum at the 53.2 keV gamma-ray energy emitted by ¹³³Ba. These findings emphasize that neglecting self-attenuation correction can result in substantial underestimation of activity concentrations, particularly for radionuclides emitting low-energy gamma rays, and highlight the necessity of applying appropriate correction methods in gamma spectrometric analyses of cement materials. The activity concentration of ²²⁶Ra in the cement samples was determined indirectly using the gamma-ray emissions of its short-lived decay products, namely ²¹⁴Pb at 295.2 keV and 351.9 keV and ²¹⁴Bi at 609.3 keV and 1120.3 keV, assuming secular equilibrium between ²²⁶Ra and its progeny. The activity concentration of ²³²Th was evaluated using the gamma-ray emissions of ²²⁸Ac at 338.4 keV and ²⁰⁸Tl at 583.2 keV, while the activity concentration of ⁴⁰K was calculated directly from its characteristic gamma-ray line at 1460.8 keV. The measured activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra ranged from 13.1 to 59.9 Bq/kg, those of ²³²Th from 10.5 to 41.6 Bq/kg, and those of ⁴⁰K from 72.9 to 338.6 Bq/kg. These variations reflect differences in raw material composition and cement formulation among the investigated cement types and manufacturers. In particular, blended cements, namely CEM II and CEM IV, generally exhibited higher ⁴⁰K and ²³²Th activity concentrations compared to ordinary Portland cement (CEM I). This trend can be attributed to the incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and pozzolanic additives, which may contain elevated levels of potassium- and thorium-bearing minerals. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) values achieved in this study demonstrate the high sensitivity of the gamma spectrometric system and the suitability of the applied methodology for low-level radioactivity measurements. The MDA values were determined to be 1.3–2.0 Bq/kg for ²²⁶Ra, 1.0–2.6 Bq/kg for ²³²Th, and 2.6–5.8 Bq/kg for ⁴⁰K, indicating that even relatively low activity concentrations could be reliably detected and quantified. These low detection limits are particularly important for evaluating compliance with radiological safety criteria and for identifying subtle differences in radionuclide content among different cement types. To evaluate the potential radiological hazards associated with the use of cement as a building material, the radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and the activity concentration index (I) were calculated for all cement samples. The radium equivalent activity, which provides a single parameter representing the combined radiological contributions of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K, was found to range from 43.0 to 127.3 Bq/kg. The highest Raeq value was obtained for sample C-1, while the lowest value was observed for sample C-6. All calculated Raeq values were well below the recommended safety limit of 370 Bq/kg, indicating that the investigated cement samples do not present a significant external gamma radiation hazard. The activity concentration index (I), calculated in accordance with the European Union radiological assessment criteria, ranged from 0.15 to 0.45 for all samples, thereby satisfying the condition I<1. This index is commonly used to assess compliance with reference dose limits for building materials and serves as an important indicator of potential radiological impact on building xxv occupants. The obtained results demonstrate that all cement samples analyzed in this study comply with international radiological safety requirements. Overall, the findings indicate that the cement samples investigated do not pose any radiological risk in terms of either internal or external radiation exposure during their use in construction applications and are therefore considered suitable for use as building materials from a radiological protection perspective.
