Özet
Tez Merleau-Ponty'nin sanat felsefesini Hegel dialektik'i ve bu dialektik'in kendisi tarafından yeniden-biçimlendirilmiş biçimi açısından ele almaktadır. Getirdiği iddia, Merleau-Ponty'nin sanat-yapıtı ontologisinin ve sanat-tarihi kuramının dialektik olarak anlaşılması gerektiğidir. Merleau-Ponty: dialectic without synthesis and the ontology of the artwork by Fiona Tomkinson The thesis explicates Merleau-Ponty' s philosophy of art in terms of his position with regard to the Hegelian dialectic and to his own refashioning of this dialectic. It will argue that Merleau-Ponty' s ontology of the artwork and his theory of art history both need to be understood dialectically. This involves an explication of Merleau-Ponty' s phenomenological ontology with the aim of demonstrating that it is in itself dialectical and that his writings on art form an integral part of this ontology. For Merleau-Ponty, dialectic is necessary as the only alternative to philosophies of immanence, which he regards as untenable because of their failure to engage with the pre-reflective. However, there are also aspects of Hegel's dialectical philosophy, such as its tendency to systemisation and its belief in necessary progress that Merleau-Ponty rejects. This leads him to the formulation of the concept of 'hyperdialectic' which can be described as a 'self-conscious' dialectical process which does not claim to reach an ultimate synthesis.I wish to demonstrate that Merleau-Ponty's theory of perception is dialectical in this way, although the connection is not made explicit in his writings, and that the concept of the hyperdialectic can also be applied a fortiori to the ontology of the artwork, which for Merleau-Ponty functions as an intensified kind of perception. This results in a belief in the self-transcendence of art, and a pluralistic conception of a progress of art history which - contra Hegel - is seen as having no end.
