The introduction outlines the assumptions concerning the critical dialogue that Nietzsche conducts with the Greek philosophers, a dialogue that reveals a new philosophical spirit in engaging with the philosophical heritage. This new spirit generated a number of problems that expressed themselves and shaped the central question of this study, namely: What is the nature of Nietzsche's reading of Greek philosophy? Is it a classical reading, like that of a historian of philosophy, or is it the reading of a philosopher of the history of philosophy? What is the aim and purpose of this reading, and how were the dimensions of this reading determined and reflected in his philosophical experience? Consequently, how does the Nietzschean reading distinguish itself from other philosophical readings of the Greek philosophical heritage, and what does Nietzsche seek from his return to Greek philosophy in particular? To answer this central question, which is embodied in Nietzsche's position toward Greek philosophy, the research was divided into three chapters, as follows. Chapter One – History of Philosophy as a Philosophical Problem: In this chapter, the study examines the conceptual and historical background of the problematic term“history of philosophy”as a contested concept over which philosophers have disagreed, accepting or rejecting it in different ways. The study addressed the importance of the philosophical beginning in relation to the nature of the philosophical thinking that follows it. Although the history of philosophy has attracted considerable interest from both historians and philosophers—especially the Greek beginning, which represents the dawn and birth of philosophy, or the first foundation of the activity of philosophical reason—there has been disagreement over how it should be understood. While historians have viewed the history of philosophy as a means of preserving ideas and theories, discussing them, and either supporting or opposing them, philosophers have gone a step further, insisting that it is itself a“philosophical problem”whose study requires a distinctly philosophical practice or creative philosophical activity. For this reason, the study selected three philosophical readings, historically and methodologically different, that were among the most prominent in this debate: 1. The first reading holds that the“history of philosophy”follows a rational trajectory in which reason necessarily moves from the abstract to the concrete; this is the Hegelian reading. 2. The second reading maintains that the history of philosophy is tied to human reality and is a reflection of social and political reality; the Marxist reading of the history of thought serves as the principal model of this approach. 3. The third reading, although distinct from the previous two, is divided between understanding the“history of philosophy”either as a history of metaphysics, as Nietzsche claimed, or as an ontological history, as Heidegger argued. Chapter Two – Nietzsche and Tragic Philosophy: This chapter examines Nietzsche's reading of Greek philosophy, revealing his attempt to dismantle the concept of system that is closely tied to philosophical thought. In doing so, he distinguished two phases of Greek philosophy by means of the categories of beauty and logic. The first category applies to pre-Socratic Greek philosophy, which he termed“tragic philosophy,”characterized by an aesthetic spirit in which art constituted its backbone. Accordingly, Nietzsche invested the mythological figures Apollo and Dionysus with purely philosophical meanings: the first, Apollo, expresses reason and thought and thus becomes a symbol of rationality and moderation; the second, Dionysus, expresses a life-loving spirit always attached to sensibility and joy, thus symbolizing ecstasy, excess, playfulness, and love of life, which manifests itself in music. Nietzsche unifies philosophy and taste in what he calls“tragic philosophy,”which, in his view, begins with Thales, even though Thales is regarded as the first philosopher, when he posited the principle of unity in being. However, the genuine seeds of philosophy appear with Anaximander, who, for Nietzsche, embodies a lofty tragic pride. The tragic spirit reaches its peak with Heraclitus, who contemplated being aesthetically. This has led some to regard Nietzsche's return to Greek philosophy as a return to Heraclitus. This return prompted him to criticize Parmenides, especially for his identification of being with reason, without neglecting the place of Anaxagoras in Greek philosophy, particularly in his aesthetic interpretation of nous. Chapter Three – The Critique of Greek Rationalism: This chapter, titled“The Critique of Greek Rationalism,”examines the evolution of Greek philosophical thought from a focus on art and beauty to a preoccupation with reason and rationalism. It is this notion that enabled Nietzsche to expose the errors of reason, which, in his view, played a fundamental role in diverting philosophical thought from its proper path. Here, the study sought to show Nietzsche's critique of Socrates, whom he holds responsible for this deviation. Socrates represents a decisive moment in this transformation, as his ideas contributed to waging war on life through logical syllogisms and freezing it within the bounds of reason. This represents an optimistic tendency whose most significant product is science, which, according to Nietzsche, destroyed human life. The most distinctive feature of this rationalist outlook is its metaphysical character, which became firmly entrenched in Plato's Theory of Forms, wherein Plato grants priority to the intelligible over the sensible and consolidates a dualistic distinction between a true world and a world of ghosts and shadows. Nietzsche, in his reading of Greek philosophy, attempts to transcend this metaphysical dualism by launching a vehement attack on the apex of the Platonic pyramid, namely, the intelligible world. Thus, he establishes a discourse that accords primacy to the sensible world as the true world, teeming with tumult, life, and joy. Through this discourse, he seeks to overcome metaphysics in a genealogical manner, heralding new values in which the human being becomes the creator or producer of truth rather than its slave, by means of the central concept that occupies a privileged position in his philosophical experience: the“will to power.”The conclusion clarified the results reached by the study, among them Nietzsche's endeavor to demolish the metaphysical history of philosophy by liberating it from the ideal rational orientation bearing the Platonic stamp. In this way, he grants priority to the sensible over the intelligible world, in contrast to Plato, who gave priority to the intelligible over the sensible. Nietzsche goes even further by seeking to abolish metaphysical dualism, aiming at smashing eternal rational idols and calling for a form of life created by art, whose essence is the“will to power,”which he discovered in Greek tragedy as the highest expression of art.
