Sartre'a göre sindirim felsefeleri somut deneyimimizi ondan edindiğimiz bilgiye indirerek geride bilinçten bağımsız şeyler bırakmaz.
The subject of this work is the concept of consciousness in the early philosophical writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. For Sartre, the problematic of consciousness is shaped primarily by its structure—intentionality—and by the fact that it concretely establishes our relation to the world. Intertwined with existence, and considered alongside it, consciousness is, by its structure, distinct from the objects of which it is conscious. For Sartre, the major issue is that this distinction has not been sufficiently radicalized. The Transcendental Ego appears, for him, at the heart of consciousness as a structure that does not conform to its nature as consciousness. This creates several problems: phenomenology, which should provide us with the possibility of philosophizing in a radical way, ends up returning us to the stage of“digestive”philosophies. Through intentionality, every moment of consciousness is defined as“consciousness of something,”and thus, by its very structure, is in relation with its object. Regardless of the nature of the object of which we are conscious, consciousness is intentional in each of its acts (such as perceiving, imagining, judging). Through the phenomenological epoché (ἐποχή), all objects of the material world and of the psychic sphere are considered — whether they actually exist or not—insofar as they are the object-pole of my intentional consciousness. For Sartre,“digestive”philosophies do not leave behind things independent of consciousness, since they reduce our concrete experience to the knowledge we derive from it. Intentionality offers philosophy precisely the possibility oof access to concrete experience : consciousness, by its structure or essence, is always understood together with the object to which it is related. What deprives us of this possibility, for Sartre, is the Transcendental Ego. By this he means that self-consciousness and self-knowledge belong to consciousness in a transcendental way, and that its“self”or Ego forms one of the poles of intentionality. For Sartre, the Ego does not belong to the structure of consciousness but only to the psychic plane. The distinction between consciousness and its objects can only be preserved if we recognize the Ego as an object for consciousness. If, structurally, consciousness is consciousness of something, then for a consciousness that reflects upon itself, the“self”can only be an object. As a result, the Ego cannot be included in the structure of consciousness. The Ego draws all its content from the world and appears on the horizon of psychic objects. Unlike an ego that would belong to the structure of consciousness, it is now in the world, among objects and other people, and exists only as the indirect unity of a complex of acts and situations, as the self who continues this or that act. For Sartre, every consciousness is, by its structure, consciousness of something, and at the same time, immediate consciousness of itself. The Ego appears with reflection, and is nothing but the unity of acts, situations, and psychic qualities. Like any other transcendent object for consciousness, it is given only through a profile(Abschattung). Consciousness is positional consciousness of the object it is conscious of; and since consciousness cannot be an object for itself, its consciousness of itself cannot be positional. Therefore, any given consciousness is also non-positional consciousness of itself. Thus, for Sartre, the structure of consciousness becomes clear: positional consciousness, i.e., consciousness of the object, expresses its structure insofar as the object is the theme of reflection. Non-positional, pre-reflective consciousness is entirely directed toward the external world. Whether its object is mathematical truths or a physical process, unreflective consciousness does not contain knowledge of what it is consciousness of. Only when it becomes the object of reflection can this previously unreflective consciousness be known and become subject to various attitudes. In this context, we emphasized the distinction between pure reflection—which does not seek to transcend immediate consciousness in favor of realities external to consciousness—and impure reflection—which addresses psychic facts transcendent to consciousness. Psychologism is the attempt to reduce the lived world to psychic processes. In Edmund Husserl's work, overcoming this tendency appears as a necessary step in the development of phenomenology as a rigorous science. From this perspective, we suspend our judgments about the material and empirical world in order to attribute existence and absolute certainty to psychic processes. Phenomenological reduction, on the other hand, attains certainty by suspending our judgments about both the empirical and psychic domains, and by analyzing the fundamental structures or essence of consciousness within the transcendental field of experience. For Sartre, consciousness is an absolute fact: by its structure, it leads us toward the being of the phenomenon and our relation to the world. For Husserl, at the end of the phenomenological epoché, we learn the modes through which objects are given as the themes of acts of consciousness: objects are not contained in acts of consciousness like physical bodies are contained in a sack. Considered as the theme of intentional consciousness, objects are phenomena. Phenomena do not refer to a hidden truth behind themselves. However, for Sartre, consciousness leads us to an ontological ground that cannot be reduced to the consciousness of the phenomenon. For him, although human reality and consciousness both lead us to the factual domain—and although phenomenology is, for him, a science of facts—there is no confusion of conscience with the psychic domain. Psychic facts are distinct from consciousness in the same way that material objects are distinct from it. The exclusion of the Ego from the structure of consciousness follows from this distinction: for the existentialist, consciousness is separate from psychic and physical processes and constitutes the domain of the meaning of these processes. At the same time, however, the foundation of certainty which is Transcendental Ego no longer exists. Sartre, who does not accept knowledge as his starting point, establishes the ontology that forms the ground of knowledge. Pure reflection prepares the ground for us to inquire into the being of consciousness, the ontological domain corresponding to consciousness. The fundamental aim of this study is to show the ways in which the structure of consciousness, for Sartre, differs from the consciousness analyzed by Husserl, and that the problems Sartre's concept of consciousness aims to solve—as well as the general orientations it represents—emerge from within phenomenology itself. With this aim, we examined how the fundamental features of consciousness, as the subject matter of phenomenology, are transformed in Sartre's interpretation. We showed the structure of consciousness devoid of the transcendental ego, its relation to the world and to knowledge, its relation to the psychic domain, and finally its relation to subjectivity and objective knowledge. We saw that psychic objects possess only a partial and derivative spontaneity received from consciousness, and that through impure reflection the ego is given to consciousness as if it were the source of its spontaneity. We studied consciousness as pure spontaneity, which, precisely because it is pure spontaneity, is distinct from the objects of the psychic domain and, in its flow, is the source of an ever-new existence. In the framework of our readings, we saw that the concept of consciousness in Sartre's philosophy results from the evolution of certain tendencies within phenomenology, and that intentionality, as the essence of consciousness, occupies a key place in this concept. This understanding of intentionality defines consciousness not as a closed substance, but as a being always directed toward something other than itself, finding its meaning in this intentional movement.
