Cellular beams are innovative structural members developed to provide higher strength compared to solid-web beams of the same weight, thereby achieving an economical and efficient structural design. They are particularly advantageous for large-span industrial structures, commercial buildings, sports complexes, and shopping malls, where both architectural flexibility and material economy are of great importance. By allowing mechanical and electrical service lines to pass through the web openings, these beams combine structural and architectural requirements in a single solution, reducing construction time and cost while enhancing design efficiency. The production process begins by precisely cutting the web of a solid-web profile along two repeating sinusoidal lines. The two symmetric parts obtained from this cutting operation are then aligned so that their peak points overlap and are welded together. As a result, a section is formed with periodic circular openings and a greater web depth compared with the original solid-web profile. Increasing the web depth contributes to a higher bending moment capacity, while the circular openings provide sufficient space for uninterrupted passage of service lines. This arrangement offers both architectural freedom and significant savings in material and labor. Within the scope of this study, the web depths of the profiles used in the fabrication of cellular beams were increased to suit the opening geometry and to enhance load-carrying capacity. Specifically, the web depth was increased to 460 mm for the IPE330 profile, 646 mm for the IPE450 profile, 700 mm for the IPE500 profile, and 641 mm for the HEA450 profile. In this way, beams with larger section depths and periodic circular openings were obtained, providing a noticeable improvement in bending strength compared with their original solid-web counterparts. However, the presence of these openings alters the structural behavior of the beam compared with a solid web, making it susceptible to additional failure modes. In particular, stability problems such as lateral–torsional buckling (LTB) are significantly affected by the weaknesses and irregularities introduced by the web openings. Therefore, the safe and economical design of cellular beams requires a structural design approach that is different from, and more detailed than, that of traditional solid-web beams. The primary objective of this thesis is to determine, with accuracy and reliability, the unbraced length limit for plastic behavior (Lp) of circular cellular beams under lateral–torsional buckling. For this purpose, a comprehensive parametric analysis was carried out on cellular beams based on IPE330, IPE450, IPE500, and HEA450 profiles. A total of sixteen nonlinear finite element models were developed and analyzed using ABAQUS software. To achieve consistency with experimental studies and to reproduce realistic loading conditions, a four-point bending configuration was modeled. In this configuration, the web parts at the beam ends were restrained in the horizontal axis, the flange parts were restrained in the vertical axis, the stiffener plates at the loading points were fully restrained in the horizontal axis, and the midline of the web at the beam ends was restrained in the z-direction. These boundary conditions accurately represented the experimental loading arrangement in the numerical environment. The material properties were defined with a yield strength of 373 MPa and an elastic modulus of 205 000 MPa. When creating the material model, the engineering stress–strain data were converted into true stress–strain relationships to represent the material response more realistically in both the elastic and plastic ranges. The S8R mesh type (8-node, second-order, reduced-integration shell element) was employed. Residual stresses were introduced into the beam elements, and stiffeners were added at the loading points to prevent local buckling, thereby enhancing the reliability of the numerical results. The analysis procedure was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, a linear buckling analysis was performed by applying unit displacement at two points of a simply supported beam, and the critical buckling mode corresponding to lateral–torsional buckling was identified. The lateral-torsional buckling failure mode has generally been observed in the second mode during linear buckling analysis. This buckling mode was then introduced into the second stage as an initial geometric imperfection with an amplitude equal to L/1000. Here, the L value is taken as the distance over which the beam is laterally restrained. For example, if the distance between two braces is 7300 mm, the initial imperfection is specified as 7.3 mm. In the second stage, instead of unit displacement, a displacement large enough to reach the maximum bending moment of the beam was applied; equal loading was arranged so that the region of the beam between the two loading points remained under constant bending moment. At this stage, the moment–displacement diagrams obtained at the mid-span of the beam were used to directly determine the maximum bending moment capacity that the beam could achieve. To ensure the reliability of the numerical results, the finite element model was validated by comparison with experimental data and similar analytical studies from the literature. The comparison showed that the critical buckling mode shapes, maximum moment values, and deformation behaviors were in close agreement, confirming that the model accurately predicts both the buckling mode and the maximum moment capacity. This validation step also demonstrates that the parametric analyses can be confidently applied not only in theoretical investigations but also in practical engineering design. The relationship between the maximum moment obtained at mid-span and the unbraced length (Lb) was then parametrically evaluated in terms of the bending moment capacity (Mp. In the 2T approach, the cross-section taken through the largest opening—representing the most critical section of the beam—is used to calculate both the plastic unbraced length and the bending moment capacity. The results of this thesis show that the Lp values and nominal moment capacity obtained from the 2T section approach are in close agreement with those derived from the finite element analyses. In addition, it was observed that the compressive strength determined using the single-T approach defined in AISC Design Guide 31 also shows good agreement with the analysis results. This finding supports the applicability of internationally recognized design methods in predicting the lateral–torsional buckling behavior of cellular beams and confirms that the parametric data obtained in this study can be confidently utilized in engineering practice.
