Polonya-Lehistan kökenli Bobovski'nin, Osmanlı'daki adıyla Ali Ufki Bey'in kaleme aldığı üç müzik yazması (Mecmûa-i Sâz ü Söz, Turc 292 ve Mezmurlar) müzik alanındaki kültürel üretiminin başlıca örnekleridir.
This dissertation aims to re-evaluate the place and significance of Ali Ufki Bey as a bicultural historical figure within the history of early modern Ottoman makam music. During his approximately twenty-year tenure in the Ottoman Palace, Ali Ufki Bey undertook important responsibilities thanks to his multifaceted intellectual competence; this accumulation of knowledge also granted him the opportunity to escape captivity. It is evident that Ali Ufki Bey was regarded as a multifaceted figure not only in the intellectual circles of his time but also within today's academic discourse. At the core of the Polish-born Wojciech Bobovski's intellectual formation were his competencies in music and language. Throughout his life, which evolved into an Ottoman identity, he expanded upon these areas and produced three principal works related to music. The first is Mecmûa-i Sâz ü Söz, recorded under the number Sloane 3114 at the British Library in London; it is a completed anthology systematically classified by fasıl and makam, containing both vocal and instrumental works. The second is a manuscript recorded under the number Supplément Turc 292 in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. This manuscript, although incomplete and unsystematically arranged, contains significant information on music theory and performance practice. The third is the Psalms manuscript, also in Paris, recorded under Supplément Turc 472, in which Ali Ufki Bey translated the Genevan Psalms into Ottoman Turkish. One common feature of these three manuscripts is the use—at varying levels—of cultural adaptation and the synthesis of Western music notation with Ottoman musical symbols. This reveals Ali Ufki Bey not merely as a compiler or composer, but as a culturally hybrid musical agent. Therefore, in the multilayered cultural atmosphere of 17th-century Ottoman Istanbul, he must be evaluated not only for his capacity to document the makam tradition, but also for the way he reflected a culturally embedded memory—nurtured by his bicultural education and plural identity affiliations—onto his musical productions at both symbolic and semantic levels. This complex structure necessitates his study through an interdisciplinary perspective. Accordingly, this study, titled“A Cultural Figure in the History of Ottoman/Turkish Makam Music: Ali Ufki Bey,”positions him not only within the realm of music history, but also as a cultural intermediary, an intellectual subject, and a bearer of multiple identities. Ali Ufki Bey has thus been reassessed as a historical figure within both the multicultural structure of the Ottoman society of his time and the context of early modern musical production. In the second chapter, based on the concept of the“early modern period”—a term used within the discipline of history and, although partially criticized, adopted by many Ottoman historians—Ali Ufki Bey's activities in the Ottoman world are examined in relation to the socio-cultural dynamics of the 17th century. Within the historical background built around this conceptual framework, Istanbul is not only treated as a political center, but also as a multilingual, multi-religious, and multicultural urban space where intellectual productions intersected and were reshaped. Within this context, Ali Ufki Bey is not only approached as a musician but as a multifaceted intellectual. Drawing on Cemal Kafadar's conceptualization, he is highlighted as one of the symbolic prototypes of the“Age of the Çelebis.”His contacts with diverse faiths, languages, and cultural spheres, and his active role in knowledge circulation, establish him as a distinctive intellectual subject embedded in the cultural fabric of early modern Ottoman Istanbul. Notably, his sought-after presence in book transfer processes between Ottoman Istanbul and Europe in the 17th century situates him clearly within an“implicit network”of knowledge transmission and trans-cultural connection. The third chapter analyzes Bobovski's education in Poland, his captivity in the Ottoman Empire, and the process leading to his emancipation, based on historical sources. The existing biographical literature on him is, for the first time in this study, approached from a new methodological perspective. A conscious distinction is made between“Bobovski”when referring to his Polish life and“Ali Ufki Bey”in his Ottoman context. The literature is examined through a dual lens: what we learn from his own accounts versus what others-both first-hand acquaintances and second/third-party sources-have reported about him. This method demonstrates the necessity of a critical reading of existing biographical material. The transformation from Polish Wojciech to Ottoman Ali Ufki Bey is analyzed chronologically, and the study emphasizes that certain aspects of this process remain insufficiently understood. In particular, the period of his captivity in the Edirne Palace remains obscure; resolving this ambiguity through new historical findings would significantly reduce the biographical uncertainties surrounding his life trajectory. Another key subject in this chapter concerns the possible content and nature of the education Bobovski may have received in 17th-century Poland. The Polish education system at the time was largely dominated by Jesuit institutions. Emphasis is placed on the influence of Italian music education, which was prominent in these schools, suggesting that Bobovski likely received formal training in such an environment. An alternative possibility is also discussed: that he may have received a comprehensive, multilingual, and multidisciplinary education within the private estates of Polish noble families-a scenario also deemed highly plausible. In the fourth and final chapter, seven instrumental works attributed to Ali Ufki Bey are analyzed in detail. These pieces are first examined in terms of structure and form, followed by an evaluation of their stylistic and formal coherence with 17th-century Ottoman musical language based on Walter Feldman's periodization criteria for the early modern Ottoman repertoire. Furthermore, the two principal manuscript sources-those preserved in London and Paris-are compared, with particular focus on differences in notation techniques and musical representation. While the London manuscript exhibits a more systematic and organized structure, the Paris manuscript includes a higher density of Western musical symbols. This contrast demonstrates that Ali Ufki Bey reflected his dual musical affiliations not only in content but also in the material and symbolic language of manuscript production. The conceptual tools employed in this study were pragmatically and analytically used to understand Ali Ufki Bey's multilayered intellectual identity, cultural positioning, and musical productions within their historical context. The multicultural structure of the Ottoman Empire and Ali Ufki Bey's position within it were examined through Bourdieu's concept of“cultural and social capital”in order to explain his multilingual and cross-cultural competencies. The notion of“theological framing”was applied to his translation and adaptation of the Psalms as a strategy of cultural reinterpretation. The term“implicit network”was utilized to describe unrecorded yet influential flows of knowledge in which Ali Ufki Bey was embedded. Finally, Cemal Kafadar's concept of the“Age of the Çelebis”was used to emphasize his intellectual affinity with the typology of the period and to historically contextualize his cultural agency. In summary, the primary aim of this study is to reassess Ali Ufki Bey as a cultural figure in the history of early modern Ottoman/Turkish makam music within a complex historical and musical framework. The central hypothesis posits that Ali Ufki Bey was not merely a compiler of works, but a bicultural intellectual whose musical and cultural productions positioned him as an active transmitter within the multicultural fabric of early modern Ottoman Istanbul. In line with this hypothesis, a multi-layered methodology has been applied to both contextualize his historical background and technically analyze the musical works found in the manuscripts. The dissertation was structured as a qualitative research study and employed a descriptive survey model. Historical documents, musical manuscripts, and secondary sources were consulted through literature review; in the analysis section, a comparative musicological method based on Feldman's formal and stylistic analysis was used. The seven instrumental works attributed to Ali Ufki Bey were evaluated based on both formal structure and differences in manuscript notation. This approach enabled a reinterpretation of his intellectual position and dual musical language within its historical context through an interdisciplinary lens.In conclusion, this dissertation, titled“A Cultural Figure in the History of Ottoman/Turkish Makam Music: Ali Ufki Bey,”demonstrates that Ali Ufki Bey was not merely a producer of musical works, but a cultural intermediary, a historically situated intellectual, and an active agent in the early modern Ottoman Empire's multilayered cultural dynamics. His productions, when analyzed not only through technical musical data but also through the cultural and historical contexts in which they were created, reveal a far more nuanced and meaning-laden intellectual legacy. This dissertation aims to offer not only new data but also a methodological opening and a perspective that encourages interdisciplinary inquiry in the historiography of Ottoman-Turkish makam music. By centering the multifaceted legacy of Ali Ufki Bey, it seeks to lay the groundwork for future research that is more integrative, more courageous, and more critically engaged.
