Özet
Bu tez, Herbert Marcuse'un Tek Boyutlu Adam teorisinin 21. yüzyıldaki modern kapitalist toplumlarda nasıl yer tuttuğunu ve teorinin hakikat ötesi ile posthümanist kavramlarla ilişkisini, seçilen iki İngiliz verbatim oyunu üzerinden göstermektedir. David Hare'ın Stuff Happens ve Gregory Burke'ün Black Watch adlı oyunları, aslen 1960'lar sosyal devlet modelini hedefine koyan Tek Boyutlu Adam teorisinin 21. yüzyıldaki neoliberal sistemlerdeki yerini gösterip eleştirdiği ve gerçek kavramının önemini nasıl kaybettiğini tasvir etmesi sebebiyle seçilmiştir. Stuff Happens adlı oyunun analizinde tek boyutlu adam teorisinin günümüzdeki neoliberal toplumlardaki nasıl siyasetçilerin hakikat ötesi gibi dilbilimsel teknikler kullanarak kapalı bir çemberde toplumsal anlatı ve meşrutiyet inşa edip bireyde kırılamaz bir illüzyon yarattığını ortaya koymaktadır. Benzer bir şekilde, Black Watch'da yıllardır var olan değişmez kurumların baskı ve sömürü düzenindeki yerlerinin yüzyıllardır değişmediği ve bugün İngiliz kimliğini tartışan neoliberal düzen ile birlikte hareket ettiklerini göstermektedir. İngiliz toplumu Irak Savaşı çerçevesinde gelişen tutarsızlıkları fark etse de tek boyutlu adam düzeni sayesinde detaylı sorgulamamış ve doğruluk kavramının anlamını yitirmesi karşısında duramamışlardır. Sonuç olarak bu tez, seçilen İngiliz politik verbatim oyunlarının neoliberal düzende hakikat ötesi kullanarak inşa edilen anlatı ve geleneksel insan kavramını tartışan tek boyutlu adam düzeni ile meşgul edip tartıştığına ulaşılmaktadır.

This thesis demonstrates how Herbert Marcuse's theory of the one-dimensional man remains applicable in 21st century advanced industrial societies, through exploring its relationship with the post-truth phenomenon and posthumanism theory, framed through two British verbatim plays about the Iraq War: David Hare's Stuff Happens and Gregory Burke's Black Watch. Although originally aimed at welfare states in the 1960s, one-dimensional thought presents itself as noticeable in history and in 21st century neoliberalist states, which modernised Marcuse's theory with linguistic practices and post-truth rhetoric. Both plays were chosen for this thesis as they criticise the neoliberal system that allow the individual to be oppressed without them noticing it. The analysis in Stuff Happens demonstrates that the 21st century neoliberal politics revolve around a system of oppression among a closed circle of politicians who manufacture consent and legitimacy through linguistics and post-truth rhetoric. Similarly, the analysis of Black Watch reflects on how system of oppression is instigated through immutable institutions that have existed for centuries, and today manifests itself through the neoliberal system that challenges the British identity. Although British society was able to spot inconsistencies in the Iraq conflict, it remained under the sway of a one dimensional social order and was therefore unable to fully engage with the truth. It is concluded from this thesis that selected 21st century British political verbatim dramas concern themselves with neoliberal system of oppression and exploitation through using post-truth to manufacture consent, similar to the system seen in Marcuse Herbert's One-Dimensional Man, that also challenges the traditional meaning of humanity.
