Özet
Bu tez, Osmanlı düşünce tarihinde evrim teorisinin etkilerini incelemekte ve bu teorinin dönemin bilimsel, toplumsal ve kültürel yapısı üzerindeki yansımalarını analiz etmektedir. Çalışma, iki ana bölümde yapılandırılmıştır. İlk bölümde, evrim kavramının tanımı ve Osmanlı terminolojisindeki karşılıkları ele alınmıştır. Bu bağlamda, özellikle“evrim”,“tekâmül”ve“istihale”kavramları arasındaki farklar ortaya konulmuş; Osmanlı aydınlarının bu terimleri nasıl kullandıkları ve dönemin bilimsel dönüşüm süreciyle olan ilişkileri değerlendirilmiştir. Bu terminolojik tercihlerin, Osmanlı toplumunun modern bilimsel yaklaşımları kavrama biçimlerini yansıttığı vurgulanmıştır. İkinci bölümde ise, Batı'dan gelen evrim teorisinin Osmanlı düşünce dünyasına nasıl taşındığı ve burada nasıl yorumlandığı üzerinde durulmuştur. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck ve Charles Darwin'in eserlerinin çevirileriyle birlikte, bu düşüncelerin Osmanlı aydınları tarafından nasıl benimsendiği ele alınmış; özellikle modernleşme sürecinde eğitim ve bilimsel kurumlar üzerindeki etkileri tartışılmıştır. Ayrıca, Batı'da evrim teorisinin gelişim sürecine katkı sunan diğer önemli isimler —özellikle Herbert Spencer— üzerinden, bu düşünsel akımların Osmanlı coğrafyasındaki yankıları değerlendirilmiştir. Bu süreçte, Ahmet Mithat Efendi, Abdullah Cevdet, Suphi Ethem ve Hoca Tahsin gibi entelektüellerin çalışmaları üzerinden, evrim düşüncesinin Osmanlı'da nasıl yeniden yorumlandığı ve toplumsal bağlamda nasıl dönüştürüldüğü açıklanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma evrim teorisinin Osmanlı dönemindeki bilimsel ve kültürel algısını bütüncül bir çerçevede değerlendirmekte, teorinin hem bireysel düşünce hem de kurumsal yapılar üzerindeki etkilerini gözler önüne sermektedir. Böylece Osmanlı'nın modernleşme süreci, evrim düşüncesi perspektifinden çok yönlü olarak analiz edilmiştir.

This thesis examines the impact of the theory of evolution within the context of Ottoman intellectual history and analyzes its reflections on the scientific, social, and cultural structures of the period. The study is structured in two main parts. The first part focuses on the definition of the concept of evolution and its equivalents in Ottoman terminology. In this context, the differences between the terms“evolution”(evrim),“development”(tekâmül), and“transformation”(istihale) are highlighted; the way Ottoman intellectuals used these terms and their relation to the scientific transformation of the period are evaluated. These terminological preferences are emphasized as reflecting the ways in which Ottoman society conceptualized modern scientific approaches. The second part addresses how the theory of evolution, originating from the West, was transmitted into the Ottoman intellectual world and how it was interpreted therein. The translated works of Western scientists such as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin attracted the attention of Ottoman intellectuals, and the adoption of these ideas was examined, particularly in relation to their impact on educational and scientific institutions during the modernization process. Furthermore, the contributions of other important Western figures—especially Herbert Spencer—to the development of the theory of evolution are analyzed in relation to how their ideas resonated within the Ottoman intellectual landscape. Within this framework, the works of prominent Ottoman thinkers such as Ahmet Mithat Efendi, Abdullah Cevdet, Suphi Ethem, and Hoca Tahsin are examined to illustrate how the theory of evolution was reinterpreted and transformed in the Ottoman socio-cultural context. In conclusion, this study evaluates the scientific and cultural perception of the theory of evolution during the Ottoman period from a comprehensive perspective, revealing its influence on both individual thought and institutional structures. Thus, the process of Ottoman modernization is analyzed in a multifaceted manner through the lens of evolutionary thought.
