Sonuçlar WHO limitlerinin xxi altında olmakla birlikte İskilip su numunelerinin ortalama toplam alfa aktivitesi, TS266'da yer alan 0,1 Bq/L gösterge değerinin 3 katına yakındır. İçme suyu kaynaklı ortalama yıllık etkin doz, alfalar için 20,5 (10,22-56,82) µSv/y ve betalar için 46,81 (15,61-102,25) µSv/y olarak hesaplanmıştır. Çorum ilçelerindeki içme sularında elde edilen yıllık etkin doz değerlerinin WHO'nun 0,1 mSv/y (100 µSv/y) sınır değerinin altında kaldığı tespit edilmiştir.
Environmental radioactivity analysis is performed to predict radiological risks that may threaten public health. These analyses are of critical importance in terms of assessing the effects of long-term exposure on human health and monitoring compliance with international limit values. In addition, they are also important in terms of developing nuclear safety policies, ensuring environmental sustainability, and establishing a scientific basis for radiation-related risk management. Such studies on natural radioactivity around the world contribute to the creation of local and regional radiation maps and provide guidance in terms of public health and environmental safety. This study aims to determine the outdoor radioactivity levels in Çorum province and to evaluate the health risks associated with these. In order to assess the environmental gamma radiation levels and associated radiological risks in the region, a comprehensive field study was conducted, encompassing both soil and water sampling alongside in situ gamma dose rate measurements. A total of 49 undisturbed soil samples were collected from 14 districts within Çorum province. To ensure consistency and minimize anthropogenic influence, sampling was restricted to areas with no prior human activity such as agriculture or fertilization. Field studies were conducted in July and samples were collected with great care. Prior to collection, approximately 2 to 3 cm of the surface layer was removed to eliminate debris and organic matter, and around 1.5 kg of soil was gathered from each site. GPS coordinates were recorded for all sampling points to enable spatial mapping of the results. All soil samples were sent to the Radioanalytical Measurement and Analysis Laboratory within the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Council (TENMAK) Çekmece Campus of the Nuclear Energy Research Institute (NUKEN) for analysis. The radioactivity concentrations of radionuclides such as ⁴⁰K, ²³²Th, ²²⁶Ra, and ¹³⁷Cs in the soil samples were determined using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The average activity concentrations in the soil samples were found to be 425.99 Bq/kg (ranging from 27.3 to 1178.9) for ⁴⁰K, 22.71 Bq/kg (7.8-68.5) for ²³²Th, 17.56 Bq/kg (0.7-52.2) for ²²⁶Ra, and 1.21 Bq/kg (0.2-4.2) for ¹³⁷Cs. When compared with the global averages reported by UNSCEAR in 2000 (⁴⁰K: 400 Bq/kg, ²³²Th: 30 Bq/kg, ²²⁶Ra: 35 Bq/kg), it is evident that the level of ⁴⁰K is slightly over the world average, while both ²³²Th and ²²⁶Ra levels fall below it. The presence of ¹³⁷Cs, with an average activity of 1.21 Bq/kg, is attributed to anthropogenic sources and is considered a residual marker of past nuclear events, rather than a naturally occurring radionuclide. The activity concentrations were subsequently used for calculating the airborne gamma absorbed dose rate in air (ADRA). In particular, it was determined that the gamma dose rate in both soil and air in Oğuzlar district is higher than in other districts. The determination of these regional differences may be related to the local geological structure, rock types and soil properties. Overall, the measured outdoor gamma radiation levels do not appear to pose any significant risk to public health based on current international radiological protection standards. Complementary in situ measurements were performed at 1 meter above the ground using a NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometer, allowing for direct assessment of outdoor terrestrial gamma radiation. When the terrestrial gamma dose rate calculated based on soil samples (36.8 nGy/h) is subtracted from the direct environmental gamma dose rate measurements (46.14 nGy/h), the region-specific average contribution of cosmic radiation was determined to be 9.34 nGy/h. Based on the conversion coefficients recommended by ICRP and UNSCEAR, the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) was calculated as 56.61 ± 21.18 µSv/y, while the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was estimated at 0.22×10–3 . These findings are lower when compared with globally reported average values which are 73.6 µSv/y and 2.9×10⁻⁴ respectively. In parallel, water samples were collected from a variety of sources including dams, public fountains, wells, and natural springs. Unlike soil sampling, no specific exclusion criteria were applied to water collection in order to capture the full range of drinking water sources used by the local population. As with the soil samples, all water sampling locations were georeferenced for mapping purposes. 37 water samples were collected and analyzed from the province in order to determine the total alpha and total beta radioactivity concentrations in drinking water. The Berthold brand LB-770 model gas flow proportional counting system was used to determine the total alpha and total beta activities in the water samples. According to the findings, the average total alpha radioactivity in the water samples was determined as 104 (47-187) mBq/L and the average total beta radioactivity as 92 (25-221) mBq/L. The highest average total alpha and total beta activities are found in İskilip district with 0.278 Bq/L and 0.203 Bq/kg, respectively. Although the results are below the WHO limits, the average total alpha activity of İskilip water samples was obtained around 3 times the 0.1 Bq/L indicator value give in TS266 standard. The average annual effective dose from drinking water caused by these radioactive components was calculated as 20.5 (10.22-56.82) µSv/y for alpha and 46.81 (15.61- 102.25) µSv/y for beta radiation. It was determined that the annual effective dose values obtained from drinking water in Çorum districts are below the WHO limit value of 0.1 mSv/y (100 µSv/y). The average cancer risk for the local population due to radioactivity in water was calculated as 2.355×10⁻4, taking into account the risk coefficients recommended by ICRP 103. Within the scope of the study, not only numerical data but also spatial analyses of these data were performed. In order to reveal the spatial variability of radioactivity for soil, air and water analyses, regional distribution maps were prepared using ArcGIS software and integrated into the analysis process. Visual representations contribute to a clearer understanding of local differences and form the basis for similar studies to be conducted in the future. This study, which was conducted for Çorum province, is the most detailed environmental radioactivity study conducted in this context in the region to date. The study not only conducted measurements and evaluations, but also aimed to contribute to public health policies and environmental monitoring activities of local governments by quantitatively revealing radiological risk. As a result, the outputs obtained with this study will guide the systematic monitoring of environmental radioactivity at the regional level, the determination of safe limits and the prediction of possible future radiological threats. At the same time, it contributes to a scientific data-based decision- making process in the context of protecting public health, monitoring drinking water safety and the sustainability of environmental resources.
