The urgent need for a transition to a more sustainable world is transforming and reshaping almost all of the sectors as well as the financial sector. Applications of sustainable finance and sustainable investment are becoming more common day by day. These terms refer to considering environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors when making investment decisions. In this study first of all sustainable finance and sustainable investments are explained and the related literature is reviewed. Then, to test how similar the results are when it comes to long-term and cross-border investments, the impact of ESG factors on foreign direct investment (FDI) levels are examined based on a panel data analysis of 153 countries between the years 2007 and 2020. The distinction between developed and developing countries are also taken into account. According to the results, among the environmental variables only the renewable energy consumption variable is statistically significant and there is a negative relationship with FDI. The social performance and governance of countries are statistically significant and positively related with FDI. When the Paris Agreement is used as an exogenous shock regarding the environmental goals, the results show that there is a negative relationship between CO2 emissions and FDI and a positive relationship between renewable energy consumption and FDI after the Paris Agreement.
