Başak UYSAL Bu çalışmada, 20. yüzyıl İngiliz romanında özellikle 1950'lerden sonra yazdığı romanlarla, ele aldığı konularla ve yazım tekniğiyle dikkat çeken Doris Lessing'in sanat anlayışını, kadın bir yazar olarak 20. yüzyıl romanı içindeki yerini ve özellikle başyapıtı olarak kabul edilen Altın Defter adlı romanım incelemeye çalıştık. Bu tez bir Giriş Bölümü'nden, üç ana kısımdan ve bir de Sonuç Bölümü'nden oluşmaktadır. Giriş Bölümü'nde, roman türünün İngiliz Edebiyatı'nda 1650'li yıllardan başlayarak 20. yüzyıla kadar gösterdiği tarihsel gelişim süreci anlatılır. Birinci Kısım' da 20. yüzyılın sanat ve roman anlayışı ve bunların İngiliz romanına etkileri ve yansımaları değerlendirilir. İkinci Kısım' da Lessing'in yaşam öyküsü, edebi kişiliği ve eserleri genel olarak açıklanır. Son Kısım ise tamamen Altın Defter üzerinde yoğunlaşır ve bu romanın yazılış aşamasından başlayarak, yazıldıktan sonra aldığı tepkileri içeren bir incelemeyi kapsar. Bu Kısım' da ayrıca, romanı oluşturan farklı renkteki defterler tek tek incelenip yorumlanarak, Lessing'in bu romanda kadına bakış açısı irdelenir. Bu çalışmanm sonucunda, Lessing kabul etmek istemese de Altın Defter romanının gerçek anlamda bir feminist roman olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Bununla beraber, bu romanın sadece bir kadın romanı olmadığı, aynı zamanda dönemin toplumsal, siyasal ve bireysel yaşantısını da çok iyi bir şekilde yansıttığı inkar edilemeyecek bir gerçektir.

Başak UYSAL This study is centred around the art of Doris Lessing, noted for the way she wrote and for the subjects she tackled in her novels after 1950s. The study, in this context, investigates her place in the 20th-century novel as a woman writer and The Golden Notebook, the novel which is often considered to be her masterpiece. This study is composed of an introducton, three main chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction traces the historical development of the novel form in English literature from 1650s to the 20th century. The first chapter deals with the understanding of art and novel in the 20th century and with the influences and reflections of them on the English novel of the period. The second chapter is generally concerned with Lessing' s biography, literary figure and works. The last one, however, wholly concentrates on The Golden Notebook and makes a thorough analysis of the conditions both before and after the novel was written and published. This chapter also includes the investigation of the way Lessing sees women in her society by making an analysis of and comments on each notebook of a different colour in the novel. This study concludes that The Golden Notebook is an exactly feminist novel though Lessing herself does not admit it. However, it is an undeniable fact that this novel is not only a novel of women, but also it best reflects the social, political and individual life of the period.
